Title: Corona Virus 2020 how does it affect you?
Post by: Clonehead on March 18, 2020, 06:34:21 AM
I had considered creating this earlier.
It’s starting to impact us at work now and I figured it might be time to make a thread where we could vent our troubles.
Has the COVID-19 outbreak affected you or your family and how?

The brothers two kids in college are home now to finish their semesters remotely now, and he is working from home.
My wife manages receiving for a company that sells teaching supplies to schools. With all of the schools closing, they are cutting her hours.
My company that I work for bids jobs for school districts all the time.
It should trickle down to me shortly. We were already blocked for access to a building at the job-site on Monday. Their staff were working from home that day.

I couldn’t find eggs to buy yesterday. I couldn’t go into city hall to pay my water bill either. A city official met me in the parking lot and said “ we are shut down, man”. I had to drop my payment in the slot.
I’ve never seen anything quite like this before, and I’m older than Shawn, I think.  ;D

I deliver bread for a living, and I'm staying busy working keeping product on the shelf. It's a really recession proof job, that's why I got into it, that and the nearly total independence. So, the increase in sales, falling gas prices and lowering interest rates are really great for me, As long as I don't get sick!.
Yesterday I had a receiver check in my product, and I was making small talk, and she tells me she's sick with a 104 degree temperature. Needless to say I was pissed. If I get sick I'm pretty much screwed, and I will not go to work sick with Corona and infect half the metro area. That would be irresponsible.
My immune system is pretty good, outside of my Diverticulitis I never get sick, but that's bacterial not viral, so I can't transmit it to others. Hopefully that manager didn't transmit anything to me. She wasn't coughing or showing any respiratory illness, so that eases my mind slightly. I have to deliver to a retirement home and have to get screened every time I go. I heard yester a resident there was diagnosed with Corona after returning from Florida.  I buy toilet paper in bulk anyway so I'm good for a little while. I use rubbing alcohol for acrylic paint thinner, so I'll have to use something else.
Hopefully this will start to subside once flu season ends.

Business as usual. I arrested someone tonight for a serious warrant. It's job security for me, but others out there arent as lucky.

We just got word yesterday that we can work at home for the duration of this. I have to go into work for a few hours in order to be able to do it though. Hand sanitizer on everything!

Crazy JDeck about that one employee. My wife's parents are still going out and going everywhere and they are in their late 70s. They just seem to think it can't effect them.

Yeah Tamer that manager must have lost her mind. I told her she should have stayed home, but she responded, well no one else is going to do it. Like she's going to get fired for not spreading a pandemic. SMH. my dad is like me, he doesn't buy into the hype, but he's not taking any chances either. People ought to be able to live their lives if it weren't for people going to work sick. I have a libertarian mindset I don't think local, state or federal governments should have to tell people what to do, unfortunately there are some who have to be told what to do.  Same thing with the Toilet paper, you shouldn't have to tell people a 36 pack of double ply is enough. If you need that much toilet paper you have more serious problems.

I just heard that three schools we had contracted future work for have contacted us about pushing up our starting dates since all of the schools are shut down. Perhaps I won’t run out of work after all.

I went it to work yesterday to give them stuff folks can pick up if they want, but it looks like I will be working at home till this is over.

Now, if we could get my wife's parents to stay home. Her dad scheduled a surgery for early next week. Insert appropriate meme. >:(

Honestly the Hospital is the last place I'd go, you're probably more likely to get it there. You pick up all kinds of stuff in the hospital. I know a guy who caught MRSA and lost his leg. I told my dad he should probably reschedule his checkup, until things start getting back to normal.

If you're looking for bread this weekend, you're out of luck. I ordered twice as much as my average weekly order, and ended up with $1000 less than my average weekly total. I was hoping to make some money, but the factories can only produce so much. Guys with big routes ordered by the thousands and backlogged production.

I spoke with a Hostess delivery guy at my local gas station at work and he said they usually have a surplus of bread that they usually throw out but because of shortages and everything else, that they don't have anything to toss now. His shift work is shortened at each store he delivers by a large margin. That was kind of shocking to hear.

Yeah Hostess is a hot mess right now. They were once owned by International Baking Company until they went bankrupt. Then the company was divided, Flowers bought Wonder and Merits (bread) and I believe the same company that bought Pabst Blue Ribbon bought Hostess. Hostess tried to get back into the bread market, but it didn't do so well. One thing I noticed was, the shelf life on their bread was over a month, I don't even see how that's possible.

I know with pepridge farm cookies, they get tons and tons of waste. An unbelievable amount. With flowers, I'm not sure, I know I have to order 6 days ahead of time for bread and 2 weeks ahead for Tasty Kake. Which is a pain, but I guess it helps lower waste.

It probably has so many preservatives in it that it's disgusting. I only eat fresh bread...

We use natural preservatives, mostly vinegar, which is great most of the time. However when winter turns to summer, and it's more hot and humid, they have to change the formula, They don't always change it in time so the bread can mold prematurely, or they screw up the formula and it smells bad.

That's what happened last year, my bulk bread went moldy within days and my branded honey wheat smelled awful, so people stopped buying. Now that I've gotten my customers back, they have to change the formula again.

I use to have a fresh bakery near me when I lived with my dad. Now I'm forced to grab what's on a walmart shelf. Lol

I am having a hard time keeping my wife at home now. It is like she is inventing things to go out. I think I am gonna have to hide the car keys. She was convinced to stay away from the hospital this week as her dad gets a non emergency surgery. Then, her mom has a regular doctor's appointment later on this week. It is like she is finding things to go out for. I have told her that she needs to stay away from any medical place this week for a bit. Her parents, both in their late 70s, are in states of denail too. They are going out and doing things business as usual. I don't know what to think about them.

Force them to watch Contagion.

I should! I don't know what I am gonna do. And I am betting she is probably pretty calm compared to the hysteria that is out there right now.

I think the mental stuff is gonna get some folks more than this viral stuff.

My dad is still business as usual also. Still delivering cars across the state line for people buying on the internet. . Heck, his dumb butt flew back from one of those deals on a plane last week.  He said there were about 6 people on the plane. They all took their assigned seats then the flight attendant told them to “spread out”

Well, they are calling 4 counties around kc “stay at home” counties starting at midnight on Monday night. The wife’s place of employment resides in one of those counties so I believe they will be shut down as a non essential business.  Some areas consider infrastructure to be essential which would possibly include me and, my company offices out of an adjacent county that will probably follow suit so, I don’t know about myself. I’ll tell you in the morning if I’m working tomorrow

We watched Contagion yesterday and it was crazy how similar it was to covid 19, other than the mass dying. Glad we aren't living that part.

Man Clint your dad is nuts. Course I bet his is making some deniro. Took some time to shoot my new pistol I got for Xmas yesterday and had some fun. I think I am in love with the red dot sight now. This was me at twenty five yards with no prior pistol experience at all.

Not bad! Great grouping for a first time. I still use iron sights on all my stuff. Even the patrol rifle. Lol.

If you check my other thread, I.Q.s dropped sharply in regards to the Cornona Virus in Florida.

Yeah at twenty five yards I thought it was fantastic. Iron sights don't ever fail, but wow this red dot is something fantastic. I got one for my turkey shotgun. It works so much better for my old eyes.

And yes I did see your post. Crazy. My wife just read me something about the Texas Governor saying it was ok for older people to die to keep the economy going. Like I said we are just beginning to see levels of stupidity unheard of.

Sweet! That is a good grouping. Honestly I don't think I've ever shot a gun, lol. I know I should have my man card revoked. I have a couple of antique guns, a WW2 K98k and some kind of French shotgun. I would like to shoot the Mauser though, after the war they were used for competition shooting.

It turns out that manager didn't have the plegue, just a bad sinus infection. I told her she had me freaked TF out. I can't express how bad it would be if I cought it.

Whew! JDeck I have been thinking about you since you told me about your interaction. Glad to it wasn't Covid 19 and you can keep working. You really seem to have your head on straight with how to stay safe with this.

And yes, I am trying to give myself a few fun activities per day so I don't go nuts. Shooting is really a lot of fun. You just have to practice good firearm safety (number one, always keep the end of the gun pointed in a safe direction). I teach hunter safety in WV so it is fun to introduce new kids to it. I think all people should know enough about firearms to be able to at least safely handle one, put it on safe, make sure it is unloaded, etc.

Mausers are fantastic. My father in law likes them so much he has actually converted a few into full on hunting rifles. They shoot really great.

Yeah I gotta get screened about twice weekly. Those stupid temp readers don't work. They said my temperature was 91°F if that's the case I'm already dead.

Where I grew up you couldn't hunt with rifles, only black powder or shotgun. I could take this Mauser to any one of the ranges here. Maybe the next time my brother visits. He's career military and knows all about modern American weapons, but not so much antique German rifles. I keep trying to explain how the leaf sights work, but he's convinced himself they work like a grenade launcher's leaf sight. I'll have to show him.  I'm just a little reluctant, it's in perfect condition, but I'm sure there's 70 years of dust in that barrel. I'm not sure if I should disassemble and oil it or if I can just shoot as is.

Mausers are amazing rifles. I've held one once, but it was no longer operable. It ended up in the middle east, so there's no telling what kind of action it saw. I don't think the serial number was there.

Yeah they're really accurate from what I'm told. Just their rate of fire made them irrelevant after WW2. Germans were getting out gunned by the M1. I think the Turks used them in WW1, maybe some middle East country bought the leftover surplus, but I'm sure desert conditions aren't optimal, if neglected. The  one I have was definitely from WW2, as it has the German Eagle stamp.

Back to Covid tho. We have drive thru testing locations (maintained by special duty law Enforcement/EMS set up practically all over the place). We are using proper methods to quarantine people (where it can be enforced). Private property makes that hard. City parks are closed. I handled a few calls today by phone. I had to interact with some folks in a traffic crash investigation. I sanitized my hands and wore nitrite gloves and gave them 6' when possible.

No I haven't done any research on it. It would be kind of neat to see where and when exactly it was manufactured. Here's some pics.

I bet there are a bunch of hypochondriacs that get tested everyday. I'm not a hypochondriac but I swear every time I cough or have a little bit of a stuffed up nose I'm like ohh crap I got the cornholio virus. I read an article that Gretta Thurnburg thinks she's got it. She's like oh I'm one of the people who don't know they got it but I think I got it, or something like that. Lol.

I tell ya, this virus is driving me bonkers.  So many reactions so quickly without any real thought put into them.  In Indiana, we will start "shelter in place" tonight at midnight.  Grocery stores, gas stations, and doctors' offices only until April 7th.  People around here went crazy and bought up all the toilet paper and bottled water.  As if the water supply is suddenly tainted.  Folks hear the word "lockdown" and assume they'll be held at gunpoint at their front doors.  For about a week and a half, food was hard to come by unless you were lucky because people were overbuying.  It actually felt like the old days of action figure hunting, just trying to find some chicken.

At the fire department, we all must check out temperatures before we start the shift.  If it's over 100.4 degrees, we go home, paid, until we're under that.  The City itself is backing all of the employees, by sending anyone with symptoms home, paid, until they get tested and get the results back.  So that's a relief for many.  We're taking extra precautions to limit potential exposure, but no matter how you crack it, the odds aren't in any of our favor.  It's nuts on a level I never would have imagined.  All I can say and do is take care of your neighbors and yourselves and STOP HOARDING THINGS!  Best wishes to you all!

Pat, your comment about action figure hunting and chicken gave me a good chuckle this morning. We have been pretty lucky with stuff here where I live. My wife is doing grocery pick up so she doesn't go in. It works pretty good.

Things were shut down in my state as of 8pm last night. I am guessing we will be out most of April too. I think I have my wife convinced to only go out once a week on a grocery run, but she is stir, stir, stir, stir crazy. My daughter loves it, well until I make her get off her phone and or ipad to do something active; like walk to the trashcan. Stuff like that.

JDeck that Mauser is awesome. I was actually converting one to full on hunting many years ago (having the bolt turned, drilling and tapping for scope mount, sanding and reblueing, etc.) and then I had a falling out with my brother (where I was working on it) and never got it back. I might just have to go get it after seeing yours. Frankly, I would check on the value before I did anything to it though. You might have a rare one from what I am seeing.

And RC-1136 I so agree, we need a gun thread. I will start one in the Imperial Break Room.

Stay safe out there folks. Cmon in here to let us know the latest. My plan today is to start up some plants from seed (seedless tomatoes) that I am only allowed to eat with my diverticulitis. I gotta do a bit of office work and answer some message stuff, but that won't take long.

Yeah Tamer, I'm not going to do anything to it, just keep it, take it to the range. The bullets should be easy to get since they're so popular. I took it to an antique dealer and he appraised it at $200. They made millions of these things, they were standard issue. I had a Mauser pistol that I ended up selling, mostly because Virginia is stupid about handguns. I sold it for less than retail, but it was fair enough. I just didn't want to take any chances, because I was under 21 at the time and had frequent run ins with the law. But this rifle I'm keeping as is.

Makes sense to me JDeck. If you ever decide you want to sell it around that price let me know. I would buy it. I would keep it though. I did start up a gun thread in Imperial Break Room if you are interested.

I sign back in.

Against all odds, the exam was conducted. We couldn't believe it ourselves. The information policy of my university was awful - especially of the medical faculty. All public buildings were closed in Dresden and the city is basically in a big shutdown since March 21, 2020. BUT the exams still happened - with ultra special permit by the federal government. There was a conference on Wednesday, but they wouldn't tell us the result of their gathering 'till Friday 12 pm! The exams started on Monday. Anyhew. I survived. Some contestants signed off from the exam because they couldn't stand the bombardment on their nerves.
I passed all three oral examinations in Chemistry, Biology and Physics - even with good grades! So all the learning paid off eventually. But it was not a nice situation to be examined in.

I spent a couple days to recover and pack my stuff. Dresden has a curfew by now because people just didn't follow the recommendations. Most people stayed home though. It's those few who break the rules and make everyone pay for it. You cannot leave town unless you got a permit from your employer. I got some work to do here so I got all paperwork done before I crossed the country.
So I drove home last Sunday and I was confident that the police would stop me at least once! I mean I passed 5 of 16 states! But no, I was not pulled over a single time! Only saw 4 Police vehicles in the opposite direction along those 360 miles. Imagine you have the Highway all for yourself! I was in driver's heaven guys! I had about 250 miles! all for myself and felt like a boy with his die-cast cars on a play carpet. I made all the way through in just 5 Hours. I didn't speed though. My average speed was 80 mph - top speed was 125 mph, but only for 6 miles or so. Didn't want to tank more gas at the Autobahn because it's more expensive there. But talking about gas! Man, is it cheap now! That's another positive thing about this crisis. It's 4,53€ per gallon at the Moment. Last year it was at a high of 5,78€/gallon.

On the other hand I saw significantly more dead animals on the road. That made me quite sad. I mean animals see that there's less traffic, but they don't know why. Nature is getting back what belongs to it anyway. So animals spend more time on the road now - and some are killed. Saw like 5 hawks, 2 foxes, a deer and even a dog. Had to do some tricks with my stiring wheel to not hit some other birds. I tried rolling - that's a good trick! Fortunately I didn't hit anything except for an empty box of cigarettes.

So I'm feeling excellent! Governmental confinement to stay at home is the best damn thing that could possibly happen to me! I have way too many projects to be realized. And if I hoard one thing: It's material for my Star Wars madness! So I can work even though all stores are closed 'till the end of April. Also the start of the next semester has been pushed to the beginning of May.
I planned on finding a job from May to September, but the market looks more than dark right now.

The Star Wars fan convention was cancelled due to the Virus. That sucks a lot, especially because I wanted to display some of my stuff there. But I make the best out of it and build MORE STUFF. Maybe it's going to happen in summer.

Stay safe & healthy guys! Staying home is one of my favorite hobbies. And boredom is something I think we all don't know! lol

Cheers!

A miracle! The coronavirus caused scalpers to stay home. As a result, I found ALL the newest TVC wave at Walmart. I bought the new P1 clone trooper and The Mandalorian for customizing (I have another in shipment I will keep regular).

Hey RC, that's awesome news! I'm not hunting for toys anymore. Instead, I hunt for toilet paper, soap, kitchen towel, desinfectants and water. Found some water yesterday. There's no limit on water, yet, but there will be, soon!

I'm really glad you found the Mando wave! I had no other option than going to tughori. Even IF I find the wave at retail, there're enough scalpers around here who will be quicker than me. Plus they're 18,99€ each (~$21), so tunghori was expensive, yet a little cheaper! Crazy times these days...

Also my camera broke after 4 years, several flights and about 10,000 pictures...the Auto focus went out of Service on German Comic Con back in December. Luckily the camera broke at the very end of the event. Tried to fix it myself, but I have to ask a professional as soon as stores open again. That's why I cannot post any high-res images for now, but that won't stop me from building, painting and customizing!

Darth More that was sure an interesting time. Glad you passed your exam, I know that was a big deal. Now you can stay at home and customize.

As far as the Tamer household, we have been staying in, I so want to go look for a few new figures, but I am staying home and trying to decide on my internet orders. My collection room is so jam stocked right now I just have to be selective.

I did go out last Friday to pick up a come to my car and give me my groceries order and it surprised me how many were out and about.  So many people here just don't seem to care. We just heard our work will be out till at least the end of April so thats good news. I will be able to get some turkey hunting in so I don't go too stir crazy. My wife also just shared the news that NY is getting refrigerated trucks and are setting up mobile hospitals in Central Park. Crazy times!

And it continues to digress.
Fabulous news, DM, you made it! And, that was a good high speed run.
I checked three stores yesterday with no new restocks. I don’t think I will see the mando wave here.
I’m still working but my hours have been shorter the last two weeks. It’s supposed to pick up next week though. Albeit far from home for me.
The wife’s running on 5 hr days and a cut salary. I’m not sure they will make it now as when school districts reorder later in the year than usual, all will now have restricted budgets because of state and federal money’s directed towards fighting COVD19
They may only order pencils and paper for the next school year.

RC, I take it my Florida vacation is postponed then? It doesn’t look like the world will reopen in time for us to go. The end of this month is our usual target time. I imagine our situation will get more colorful from now till then.

Clint you be careful when you are out and about.

I live in the sticks in rural WV and we are finally hearing about covid 19 cases in neighboring counties now. Supposedly its still not here yet, but figure its only a matter of time now.

I have a kind of, well lets just call him an eccentric older gentleman, who has been canvasing the neighborhood and told me he is seeing activity on a campground that borders our wooded property. I don't know what to think about that. I know our governor stated that all private campgrounds are closed. I am guessing these folks probably fled an urban area trying to get away from this outbreak. My neighbor is gonna be watching those folks like a hawk. He told me yesterday has a few hundred pounds of M16 ammo!

Yeah, Florida is off limits for now. FHP is gonna control the flow up North of me. I know we'll probably get another directive or order from the Governor with instructions with what to do. The close down happens at midnight.

NJ may be heading for a total lockdown soon as well.

I have been doing 10-11 hour shifts every day as we have had so many sick call outs. We have even had a confirmed COVID-19 case in my office. The infected carrier is out on administrative leave, but who knows how many he/she (carrier was not identified) may have infected before they showed symptoms.

I am starting to cough and feel some chest congestion, hopefully it is just the regular cold/flu and not the plague LOL

My brother works for USPS in Colorado. He told me there was a confirmed case in his terminal, but he found out through his wife, that knows someone who is married to someone in a different terminal. I hate it when companies try to hide stuff from their employees.  So he was pissed lol.

Here between the weather and pollen everyone is sniffling and sneezing, then I got a Diverticulitis attack yesterday, but it was mild. Just had a 99 degree temperature. I think if it would have gotten over 100 I'd try to find some options on not having to work. I know my body but I'm not a doctor, I could have both, you never know.

JDeck hope you are ok. I know how I get a mild fever when I have a diverticulitis attack. I hope its that and not Covid 19. Man, dirty pool having to find covid 19 is in your workplace fourthand.

Dan, you be careful too. NY and NJ area seems to really be hit hard now. I am hoping we soon hear that everyone, all jobs, are supposed to stay home to let this thing die.

Part of me is wondering whether we all are gonna get this eventually anyway? I just don't know what to believe. For some it seems its just like a mild cold and others it just hammers. My wife tends to believe everything she reads on Facebook God bless her. She was telling me a story about a nurse friend she has that said her Covid 19 patient was fine and talking good and seemed great and then a half hour later was dead.

A few weeks ago they said it would get worse before it gets better, well it's worse. I'm staying optimistic. They cut back a lot of FDA regulations, so we could have a vaccine or treatment earlier than normal. They're doing blood transfusions from people who had it, but recovered, and that's building up people's antibodies. It's just a matter of time, but even a week really feels like an eternity.  Know one has any idea how long it will last, anywhere from 4-12 months, but that's really anybody's guess.

I'm doing better, I think the inflammation has passed. I just don't want to make anyone else sick if I have it. I'd be fine probably, but others not so much. I'm just monitoring any symptoms I have, I'm not coughing or shortness of breath, so I think I'm in the clear. If I really thought I had it I'd go to the doctor.  This is a hypochondriacs nightmare.

Thursday I was running a slight fever, plus allergy symptoms which was odd because I usually don't  have allergies. But I don't think I'll have to worry too much anymore, I have two more stops that are doing daily screenings to make a total of three screenings a day lol. Honestly I wish all my stops did it.

I found out a lot of the cases here in my county are from the same nursing home, evidently someone refused to go to the hospital or something. So now several residents and employees cought it. If people would just stay home this would all end a lot sooner. I went to little Cesar's last night some guy carried out six pizzas, I thought I don't think he's observing social distancing.  I'd like to start partying again too, but we have to chill out for a while until this passes, then party hard. This isn't a vacation.

Yeah Tamer yesterday I thought, damn they banned my IP address and everything. Lol. Nah, it was kind of glitchy earlier in the day. It seems like I've noticed a few different sites have been glitchy. Maybe it's because the internet is overloaded from everyone having to stay home. Just my theory.

Glad to see there isn't too much ativity here. I am assuming no news is good news.

The latest is with my wife's parents (my in laws) who are refusing to stay home during this. The latest problem is my mother in law who has Alzheimers is wanting to go see where she grew up and just go places period. She is driving my father in law crazy with her antics and yesterday he let her go to CVS by herself. We are hoping to use zoom and some technology today to kind of distract her a bit, but wow. They are both in their late 70s and just won't listen to the stay at home order.

My grandfather on my mom's side had Alzheimer's, it's such a terrible disease. In fact a friend of mines wife has it, he's just having a tough time with it. People I talk to are having a tough time getting their parents to stay home. Retired people like to go to the store or McDonald's or whatever as an outing. I'm trying my best to stay home myself. I'm a bachelor so I do the European thing of going to the store almost daily. I actually bought a week's worth of food, which is a big step for me lol.

A friend of mine called me and invited me to a birthday get together for a friend of ours. At first I was like hell yeah let's do it, I'm going crazy here. But I just texted him back and told him I shouldn't. I don't want to run any risk of making anyone sick. I've been social distancing since the week before Mardi Gras. Just after St. Patricks day, it became mandetory. Drinking at home alone isn't fun, but this isn't going to last forever I just have to stick it out.

The zoom call last night worked kinda ok, the in laws couldn't figure out how to turn their camera on, but it worked. Hopefully they will stay the heck home today.

I've been out of school since March 26th. The beginning of spring break. We are scheduled to return the beginning of May but I'm not optimistic. On line teaching/learning begins on Monday. We will be doing half days Monday through Thursday.
Fortunately for me the Wuhan virus hasn't devastated my city or state. It pays to live in Iowa where the majority of the population is spread out and not living on top of each other.
My wife is a nurse at a local hospital so I get the real info regarding the status of Wuhan in our community. Not what we are told on the local news.

I think I'm officially starting to lose it. Rumor has it they're going to open my local bar this weekend, but I don't know at what capacity. There are some bars open, but carry out only. I know a guy that goes in, orders a bunch of food and drinks beer while they cook it. Lol. I'm not that desperate yet. It kind of makes going to the bar useless if you're the only one there. In a way it sucks having to work, but no play, but at least I can get out the house and somewhat socialize at work. I've been talking people's ears off the last few days, I guess it's annoying.  Even talking to people I absolutely can't stand just for conversation.

It is indeed crazy. I have been with my wife and daughter since this all started and frankly I don't miss talking in person to anyone (maybe I am just anti-social). The bad thing for the past two week is I am getting over being sick. I had the classic symptoms of covid, but my test came back negative and it wasn't strep throat or the flu so who knows what I had. I am still not totally over it and feel pretty tired most of the time, but man thinking you have covid ain't fun. I had to coral myself in one room in my basement till I found out I wasn't sick. Now that was the pits. I had to spend from Friday afternoon when I got checked all the way till the following Wednesday till I found out I didn't have covid. It took forever for that test to come back.

As for regular people around here, I don't see many masks or gloves anymore. I think folks are just going to risk it and see what happens. My family isn't anywhere near this yet and my wife is having to travel daily to help my father in law who just came back off his second knee surgery, but we are surviving. It is crazy to me to see these states opening back up and then seeing folks get covid. Its like we started off caring about it, but now not so much.
Title: Re: Corona Virus 2020 how does it affect you?
Post by: JDeck on May 13, 2020, 10:43:17 AM
Yeah that had to have sucked in the time between having symptoms and getting the test results. Could be a sinus infection or any number of things. There are guidelines for opening states. I think phase 1 requires a 14 day decline in new cases. With testing being ramped up exponentially and having a decline in cases is a very good sign. Virginia is at their 14th day, but Richmond is asking for an exemption for opening phase 1. But ironically the GRTC (the bus line) has been operating this whole time. If they really cared they would have shut the busses down months ago, because they're just Corona hot boxes. This is a great time for people to practice risk mitigation and personal responsibility. If you know the risk involved you should weigh if you should go out. In South Korea, the Government cannot tell businesses to close. It's the individuals who make the decision whether or not to go out. I'd say it's worked pretty well, outside of a group of kids getting it at a club. I'm not religious, but I think it's stupid to say ABC (Liquor store) is essential but churches are not. Really who is anyone to tell us who is essential.

I remember the Swine flu, and it mainly effected kids, and thousands of people were dying and they kept schools open. They're talking about keeping schools closed next year. We're going to have a generation of uneducated kids. This whole thing is bizarre. We've had pandemics before, but we've never gone to these lengths. I can see a few weeks but weeks are turning into months. Things are better than they were. Hospitals aren't being overrun. This isn't the walking dead.
Title: Re: Corona Virus 2020 how does it affect you?
Post by: Tamer on May 14, 2020, 04:27:19 AM
Folks are definitely gonna have to use their own common sense to weight the risk. Frankly, I don't think we are quite there yet, but its not like you can trust the news to report right too. I know we are planning to lay low for the next few weeks to see what happens. And yes, as for schools we are getting rumors about things open way late or doing some kind of staggered schedule where all the kids aren't in school as the time. Who knows what hours those would be though.
Title: Re: Corona Virus 2020 how does it affect you?
Post by: JDeck on May 14, 2020, 09:20:11 AM
I'm to the point I don't trust the "experts" anymore. They have been wrong on every prediction, they miss the target completely on every model. Faucci is elevated to god-like status, but he's back peddled on every topic especially regarding masks. First he said they're useless, then he was pressured into recommending them. When asked why he doesn't wear a mask, he said masks only keep you from giving it to yourself. That's the dumbest thing I've heard yet. Basically they're useless.  No one knows, partially because China kept everything a secret. When things start to open I will weigh the risk involved. I'm not going into a packed restaurant, I don't regardless of Corona. I'm forced to be out in public anyway. Of course new cases will rise, but so will car accidents and plane crashes, that's the way of things. Keep your distance Chewie, but don't look like you're keeping your distance. Fly casual.

Title: Re: Corona Virus 2020 how does it affect you?
Post by: JDeck on May 15, 2020, 08:02:34 AM
Yeah testing is kind of useless, because you can get tested one day catch it the next and think you're good to go. I was talking to my dad yesterday and he brought up Herd Immunity, how it's counterproductive for everyone to stay at home. Basically a vaccine is a small dose of the virus anyway. If you expose yourself to small doses or to someone with a very mild case, then you can build immunity, and not need the vaccine. I can almost guarantee I've been exposed to trace amounts of covid since I'm out in the front lines every single day. I was slightly sick for a few days, maybe I got it and shook it, I dunno.

I am pretty much convinced I had it and they tested me wrong. It took so many days to get the results who knows. Frankly I think the mass public is just about done with social distancing and safety protocols. I am just gonna use common sense and not go places needlessly till we see about this whole herd thing is. I also feel for those loosing their jobs over this. Its pretty easy to social distance when you are still getting a pay check and make those going out feel bad because they are trying to survive. Some of the commentary and arguments I have seen on FB make me want to hurl.

I can only imagine what's on Facebook. I think the protesting is dumb to an extent, I can kind of see it though. Some states are really extreme with their measures, so you can expect an extreme pushback. Honestly I think it's unconstitutional to not allow people freedom of religion or peaceful assembly. People aren't that dumb, most churches have social distancing measures. One church here in VA the State pressed charges on the pastor for having more than 10 people. The federal justice department stepped in and said the state cant do that. There was protests here and I think they were affective to a degree. They did start phase 1 this weekend, but my local bar is still closed, I think they're doing restoration, also they feel it's too soon. See that's the way it should be. Individuals should be able to make their own decisions.

We are in orange again this week. Still have to go into work. Man, folks are still walking around without masks, etc. Sure hope that vaccine gets the green light.

The situation in austria is not the best. We had the first hard lockdown back in march. The numbers were pretty low over the summer but at the beginning of November the numbers exploded and we had another lockdown. Tomorrow the second hard lockdown ends and stores can open again. Restaurants and hotels will be closed until the beginning of January. A great burden for the economy.
The government now wants to test the entire population.
I had a PCR-test back in November because I had contact with a potentially infected person at work. My test was negative.
Two days a week I work from home. I try to stay optimistic but it is a tough year.
I wish you guys all the best. I hope it gets better soon.

Good to hear from you Fiala. I have been wondering how it is in other countries. We are just plain nuts over here. We should have shut down again, but think we are trying to just muddle through till the vaccine gets approved.

Here in VA, theres really not many restrictions. The Govna' ordered that bars be closed at 10:00, like it's gremlins, if you drink past 10 you get the corona. I kind of get it, the clubs downtown, they don't get started till 10. I don't go clubbin'  my local bar is closing jan first, mostly because of being shut down for several months this summer.
Not wearing a mask is now a misdemeanor. The store manager has to call the police. I don't care about the mask thing anymore, it's obviously not working but fighting it is a no win battle.

I've been offered the vaccine thru my job. But I'm unsure about taking it. Because vaccines have had complications in the past.

So for reasons like that, I'm opting to continue doing what I have to stay safe.

The infection map for us is now in the red (we have been orange for the past two weeks) and nothing is closed down or changing. No word about mask use, etc. It is just nuts around where I live. And I live in a very rural area.

I hate to say it but personal freedom has come before the safety and well-being of society. What makes us the best country in the world is also killing us.

They finally gave us the go ahead to work from home today. I mean the kids haven't been in school in weeks, but the teachers now have it even without kids. Kinda figured it was that bad. We are now working at home til the first of the year.

Got an appointment for my vaccination tonight. That's 8 hours from now and I'm probably going to feel miserable tomorrow. So I use the time 'til then and build on some current projects now. Tomorrow when I can do nothing, but lie in bed, I'll post on here whether you missed me or not  ;D

I'll let you know how I feel with Astrazeneca.

I have had both vacinations since February now and really didn't have too many ill effects except for a sore arm for a few days. Never had a shot that hurt later like that.

Things are starting to open back up, but we are still in our covid frame of mind as my daughter doesn't have any vaccine yet. I sure hope those child trials finish up soon so we can get all the way back to normal. I haven't been to a store or any place like that since last year other than to get a new battery for my truck.

A friend of mine got it, early-mid February. She lost her sense of taste and smell and got tested, and showed positive. Quarantined for a week or so, got tested again and negative. That was her only symptoms. She said it was really weird not being able to taste or smell though. It's just weird how some people have little or no effects and some people die from it.
The restrictions aren't bad here, but there are some rules. My favorite hang out spot got shut down the other day. They had it coming though. They didn't follow any of the rules. Were talking full capacity shoulder to shoulder just about.  On one hand it's easy to say they shouldn't have let so many people in, but who's going to turn down paying customers? Especially in the restaurant industry. Profit margins are razor thin in a normal situation. I hope businesses will be able to survive this.

Yeah, a lot of service type businesses around my area have shut down too. I am thinking once we get that vaccine for kids I am hopeful we will be over the worst of it.

Well, I expected the worst, but nothing happened! I sense no side-effects from my vaccination with AstraZeneca even though my parents felt horrible for two and four days after they got their shot.

Glad you are feeling no ill effects. Folks are kind of the same way over here with the shots. Some really bad side effects and some none at all.

This isn't covid related but people around here are freaking TF out about the pipeline hack. People are panic buying gas and creating a shortage because individual stations can't keep up with 4 or more times the usual traffic. There are lines wrapped around stations like it's 1975. Just STOP. if you don't need gas don't buy it. I have enough in both my car and truck to last until next Thursday. It's like the toiletpaper crisis all over again. Fortunately people can't sell gas on ebay.
If this goes another week who knows how bad it could be. Worst case scenario I have to use super high octane. Which in the car would actually be beneficial, because though it can be run on 87, the compression ratio is really high, 13:1, and the timing has to be delayed on 87 to avoid knocking, which isn't ideal. I usually use mid-grade.  In the truck, i use 87, i don't think it would benefit from a higher test, but if that's all there is, i guess I'll have to. I'm not going to contribute to the madness. I'll see what things are like Saturday my usual fill up day.

Yeah, I read about that Monday night and it was on the news and in the papers yesterday. As far as I know "only" the states along the East Coast are affected, right? But I suppose most states across the country will be affected when fuel is transferred to the East to fill the gap. The news say that gas is going to be more expensive here because the USA were going to buy contingents of fuel from Europe (probably Norway and the UK). People aren't panic-tanking here yet, but gas has become more expensive since the beginning of the year. The German government started to increase the price by 10 cents per liter every year from now on to help reduce CO2 emissions. That makes 37,8 cents per gallon more - every year. And 60% of the price for gas we get here is already summed up by 4 different taxes! It’s crazy. I'm just glad I'm not dependent on driving. I ride my bike to the campus every day and use the car about 3 times a month. Mileage may vary because if I drive home twice or three times a year it's a distance of 363 miles.
So yesterday I got some gas for 1.47€/liter ($6.66/gallon), which was "cheap" in comparison because other gas stations took 10 cents more per liter ($7.12/gallon). It's expected to increase up to 1.80€/liter ($8.16/gallon) here in Germany over the next couple weeks.
You're right on the eBay business. I'm sure if people could, some would re-sell their gas on eBay for a fortune. And people panic-buying stuff is only making the problem worse.
I'm just glad I can jump on the train whenever I need to. Took me 10 minutes to work every day for 3 1/2 years for 60 bucks a month, so that was far cheaper than using the car and saved some mileage to maintain the value and condition a bit.

I hope this issue will be solved, soon, but I'm afraid that these hacks will increase globally over the next years/decade...it's just the new way to make trouble. Serious trouble.

Yeah now we have this gas thing. Cause people don't have common sense.

All I know is I got the call my girl gets her covid vacination in a few weeks so we might actually be able to go out and do some stuff this summer!

Well, if there is gas. :o

I was at one of my stores building a display and the GM and some random guy were talking aboyt it. The guy was like yeah I called all my family members and told them all to fill their tanks up. I don't have a car but I bought two gallons to sell when people are stranded. I got pissed. I said people like you are the problem. There is plenty of gas for everyone, you're creating a panic situation where people are buying needlessly causing the problem. He was like well that's true. Damn right it's true.

Then last night tge sales rep sent a group text to all the drivers saying everyone should fill their trucks up everyday. I'm like wait stop, that's only going to make it worse.  I feel like the one guy on a burning building trying to get people to stop trampling each other, but the building isn't really on fire it's just a bunch of idiots yelling fire.

On a different note. For real though, I'm thinking of getting the vaccine just so I can take a cheap vacation. $200 for a four day cruise to nassau. Sheeeit. Sign me up. Also cross country round trip flights also $200. Im going somewhere.

Good news, my daughter gets her first shot today. She will be ready to roll before June is over!

I got it back in July 2022 and was completely out of order. I slept most of the time because I felt completely exhausted. I felt sick for 3 days before I was tested positive. The worst condition lasted for 7 days and it took me another 6 days to be negative again. I was negative a day before my dad's birthday so I was extremely happy that I could drive home just in time. Wish I had never caught this crap.

Yeah it stinks. I have had it twice now for sure, but think a few more times too. These homemade tests are so here or there if you ask me.

Thankfully I don't seem to have any of the crazy after conditions some folks get. Glad you were able to get over it ok too Philipp.

Sharon, my wife, was diagnosed with it a month ago. Came on suddenly at work one Monday. She stayed home for a week, lost most of her taste but gained it back as she recovered. I did not catch it. I may have in the beginning and not known it but if so, I didn’t get the reaction or the symptoms that many did.
Surprising considering I know my mother has sent off DNA to companies that research family lineage in the past.
If that were to be a factor, you would think I would be more apt to catch it in the bad way,  :D

Never got it, despite having to work every single day of the pandemic.
