I am sitting here racking my brain this morning deciding whether I want to spend the coin on the newer Vintage Box Deco Slave I vs. just keeping the Amazon Slave I I got however many years ago. I am trying to come up with any differences other than some engine repainting?
Newer version

Older Amazon Exclusive One:

I mean there are some slight box variations, but enough to justify $150?
With my space limitations and the crazy prices nowadays I wondered how many of you will be getting this version if you have the older one like I do?
I hate to say it, but I might just wait for this new one to go on mega-clearance or not get it alltogether!
-
Really the only difference is the clear display stand, and the engines, maybe a little better paint job. I don't even have the Amazon exclusive S1, and I'm hesitant. At first it was a solid no, but I could actually use it for an upcoming project. Still $150. That 6" snowspeeder costs less and it's completely brand new. It's just another example of repack, repaint repeat that we're seeing with TVC.
-
I just remember the awesome Target Set for the last anniversary of TESB and man now that was a great deal with some great product. It just seems outrageous to charge us that when the last iteration, pretty much the same thing, was so much cheaper.
-
Yeah the OTC Target one was a steal at the time. The MSRP on the TVC one was $70. I don't know how much inflation we've had since then but 100% increase? For a stand. I get that licencing is more expensive now, but still. I guess they look at eBay prices and think oh people will pay anything for this stuff.
*Edit* well I went ahead and pre-ordered. Sigh. To put it into perspective, the '81 Slave one cost $16, fast forward to 1996, the same basic ship sold for $30. Of course that's over a 15 year period, but still, same thing I guess.
-
I will probably end up with one, but still don't think I am gonna bite on a price that high. I keep thinking of that great new Hovertank and what we were able to get it for.
I think it is still able to be had at around $35 or so now.
-
The hovertank was a cool thing, but it's failure was due to horrendous distribution. It was supposed to go to B&M stores along with wave 2, but wave one backlogged inventory. Amazon was the only place that had it, but the drivers were AWOL. so they just got dumped at Amazon and Ollie's outlet, less than a year later going for $25. You can't even get a driver for $25. That's a huge problem in itself, all these tanks and no one to drive them.
Boba Fett stuff sells. If I already had the TVC1 S1, I would not have bothered, I don't want to miss out again. I saw on eBay a TVC1 S1 in horrible condition, asking $150. I'll play it safe this time. My problem is I wait for stuff to his stores, and that never happens. I still haven't seen the Jabbas palace playset in stores, luckily I pre-ordered that.
-
Your right about Boba Fett Stuff selling. Still see it clogging shelves at that price point. It just ain't that huge. I know its a few years removed from its last release, but man that price point is just getting me.
-
I got this one on clearence back in 2014 for 50€ at Toys "R" Us. That was a great deal! Did not expect to find it here in Germany at all - but TRU picked it up! Got two more used in the bay - one damaged and incomplete for 25€ and the other one for 40€ - complete. And I'm very happy with it!
$150 is steep - a total impudence to the price on Amazon 7 years ago...you can pre-order it for 180€ here, now. Ridiculous! So EASY pass for me here. BUT I'm happy to all who missed it back in the days. The box is nice, the added paint apps are neat, but do not justify that salty price! What do I know…
I'm just glad to be a loose collector by now.
Cheers.
-
Philipp, evidently we are pretty much on the same page. It will be interesting to see if folks bite at that price, especially (like JDeck already mentioned) when the new 6" Snowspeeder is coming out at the same time. I know vintage sells, but this will really show if putting it in a vintage box makes it sell.
The sad thing is if this goes bottoms up, will they use this as an excuse to shorten the vintage line up? Kinda like what happened when the last Slave I went on clearance?
-
Sad, whomever is doing their pricing is just beyond "misinformed" and into the realm of excessively greedy. Why are the X-Wings at about the pricing when they were Target exclusives and this one above and beyond the Amazon exclusive? I completely understand the need to profit, but this is not gonna fly with me. There is such a thing as pricing yourself out of the market....even with the popularity of the mandalorian. I'll obviously pass when I would of otherwise bought one.
-
Dax,
I totally concur. I won't say no outright yet, but only at a deep discount. This is the way!

I'm much more comfortable these days waiting for the vehicles and figures to go on sale/clearance or not pick them up at all. I'm willing to pay higher prices from Marauder, Zica and Boss Fight, but not from the big manufacturers with lesser quality or repacks.

If that's not a punch in the face for Hasbro...but it doesn't support the brand if we all start buying on clearance only! It's a downwards circle and eventually we'll only punch our own guts.
I agree the price tag is steep compared to the original release - especially for being a slight repaint. But if that's the price to pay in 2020 I guess we got to take that pill. I rather buy this for 220€ from Hasbro than paying 300€ on eBay. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if Hasbro plays that "limited supply" game, too! But they'd never admit it. I'm sure they are aware of the prices on the secondary market. So they might think "hey why wouldn't we adjust (read: raise) prices, too? It's like at the stock market:
You play the game until one gets broke!
-
Yeah, the sad thing is Hasbro uses things like this (people not buying repacks at fuller prices) to say there isn't demand for 3.75".
Still, I haven't ordered one yet. I know the arguement for why I should but wow. $150 for a repaint and repack!
Flash I can sure see your point and Darth More I sure see yours too. I wish there was some way we (Hasbro and we collectors) could all meet in the middle.
-
I bought one of these as i only have the Jango Fett version from 2010? and wanted the Boba colour scheme ..in comparison it feels a bit more flimsy and the doors don't clip shut so well, infact i have a bit of a gap from the canopy and body :-\ ..maybe i've not clipped the hinge in right, will have to have another look at it
You can see the gap on this picture, it's worse when you get up close bbfet ..on a plus side the paint apps are lovely on the back, just need to dirty up the front too

-
Woah. That is not good for that type of price!
I had to clip that image to see it better, but man. I sure hope it is a hinge thing. Has anyone else gotten one in to see if this is the same? That is not good for that type of price.
Off to the front pages.
-
Yikes, yeah for the price you pay it should lock tight. Also I've heard the wings don't lock very well in flight position, seeing that is the major advantage of the new Slave I, having the stand and painted engines, that kind of sucks too.
I pre-ordered mine from Dorkside, I don't know why, I'm a glutton for punishment I guess. They have already delayed the shipment from May to June, and I'm almost willing to bet all my Star Wars guys come June it will be pushed back to July, and so on and so forth. This is why I hate pre ordering. I wish I could just put on my flip-flops drive to Wally-World and buy stuff. Where did you order yours from?
-
I received mine yesterday pre-ordered from Hasbro Pulse. I am surprised at the flimsy feel of the cockpit canopy. I can't believe the design of it does not allow it to remain open in landing mode. It's definitely a two hand operation getting figures seated and the canopy seems to enjoy getting in the way and busting your chops while trying to do so.The way it clips into the front of the ship also stinks out loud. Opening the cockpit in flight mode is a no no and is reminiscent of a bad diving board, you can just tell it's going to snap. The wings seem to be slight uneven. The rubbery wing struts don't seem to help but only add to the problem. You can hear a slight click as the wings lock into flight mode and by lock into I mean barely. The display stand holds it nicely and that's a good thing because it seems better for display than play. Overall it's nice to look at and gets the job done. Shame on me for expecting more.
-
From what I've seen on videos, the cockpit insert can be removed, put in the figure and place the insert back in. I might cancel my order and order through BBTS. I haven't gotten a pulse account, but I might as well.

You can definitely pop it off in order to insert figures, no doubt about it. It's not something I would be confident doing every time. It's not the easiest thing to put on and take off and it just doesn't seem sturdy enough to keep doing. I have zero doubt in my mind that my 8 year old son is going to break it accidentally. All around it just doesn't feel as well put together as other ships and vehicles. It is still cool though. Maybe this slave 1 for display and the shadows of the empire slave 1 for play.
-
I would not let kids play with this it would be broke on the first drop :o ;D ..i've had a proper look and it's bad news, the hinge is in correct, you can see on the pictures below that it lines up correctly so dont know what i can do with it :-\ and i have noticed the side door also has gaps and sticks out near the wing ..i would like to know if they are all like mine or have i just got a bad one?? ..i think i'm going to display it back facing haha

You can definitely count on them to ship quick. Between you and me if I wanted one the quickest I would use them or EE (that link is in the very first post on this thread).
I am so disheartened reading these comments this morning. Sounds like they thinned this thing down so it is really just a display piece. I so appreciate the feedback though. I am not getting one of these myself unless they are reduced drastically. I plan on taking some of this back to the front page too.
-
All of these issues plus the exorbitant price tag goes back to my point about where I'm comfortable spending my hard-earned dollars. Although I'm interested in buying more Hasbro product, I'm not willing to pay more money for less quality and less articulation, especially since I know Hasbro is capable of doing better (G.I. Joe anyone). I know I've heard the comments that if we don't buy what Hasbro puts on the shelves, then we can't hope to get more and better product in the future. While that's the corporate perspective, Hasbro will have to do better by this consumer. The free market allows us to have a say in this agreement. If I'm not satisfied with Hasbro's offerings, I'll spend my money elsewhere. When Hasbro makes product of sufficient quality and availability, then I'll give them my cash. It's pretty simple.
As far as this vehicle goes, I bought the Rise of Boba Fett version (two vehicles and five figures) for my kids for about $90. I would wager the Slave 1 was worth $50-60. Now, a fancy paint deco by itself is not worth a $90-100 price jump, nor is the display stand. I hear folks say that prices have gone up across the board, and that's just the pill we'll have to swallow. I can accept that for small companies with small production runs (Marauder, Boss Fight, Zica, etc.), but a company that produces and sells in bulk, Hasbro can do better. And they'll have to if they want myself and others like me to drop some coin. What it really boils down to is that I'm content with my collection. While there are some other items I'd like to add to it, or some existing items I'd like to upgrade, if Hasbro ceased to make anymore 1:18 product, I'd still be able to enjoy my existing collection. I'm content.
-

Wow, how I associate with this point. I already have way too much than I have space for so I am kind of the point where I would "swap" out for better versions. This one doesn't seem to be it. If it goes on sale maybe I will bit, but I doubt I would take it out of the box.
I think I might go after a purple box SOTE version of this instead.
-
I would have lost all my star wars guys had I made that bet. Dorkside actually shipped today. I was about to cancel it. I'm just going to display it on a custom landing platform for my spaceport anyway. I wanted a civilian class ship, but not the BMF, so that narrowed it down. Sucks I had to pay $150, but it's a lot better than EBAY prices for the old one. I don't buy every single thing they release, but sometimes the figures I skip, I end up buying anyway for customs. You can't complain about the articulation anymore. The new figures at least are all super duper articulated.
-
It seems i just got a bad one, just my luck ha! ..this one is fine and is from the same shop so sucks to be me i guess..
-
Well I am glad to see there are good ones out there. I will be looking forward to seeing what JDeck has to say when he gets his in.

Me too ..hopefully he gets a good one ..i can push the canopy flush on mine, it just wont stay there so maybe i can bend it into shape or something
-
I got mine today. Looks like I got a good one. Honestly I don't buy 3.75 ships, I usually stick to speeders in this scale. They're toys, not models, so they aren't going to be screen accurate or full of detail. The play features, I have zero interest in, like the missile launchers, take away from any accuracy the guns have. The seismic charge buttons bother me. Some people like the playability features, but I am not a fan. I need a ship for my spaceport, a spaceport without a ship would be dumb. Otherwise I was planning to pass on it. I'm going to display this in the landed position, I think it looks better. Having it in hand, and in person it doesn't look bad in flight position. The thing that bothers me, is the canopy hinge. It's front and center when in flight mode. To me they should have redesigned it all together for flight mode. Put the canopy hinge on top, where it's less noticable. Add some lights, LEDs aren't expensive. For $150 I want lights, and some mechanisms. If I had the Amazon exclusive I wouldn't pay twice for basically the same thing. But as a first time buyer, I'm glad I got it. It's like a toy model hybrid. It's really nicely detailed, with play features but it isn't meant to be played with. It's better than the SOTE one I had as a kid, but if I had this as a kid I would have dropped it and broken it several times over.
This is what I meant by the cockpit insert being removable. The "seats" come out, to make placing figures easier. It's still a pain to do though. Also, if you want to display in flight mode, attach the wings while it's on the stand. It's works better. I had to readjust the wings that way. After I took the picture.
-
I was waiting to hear your opinon. Man everyone hates that canopy hinge. And yes for that much deniro it should practically fly. Taking this to the front pages.
-
I don't want to sound like I hate it, I just don't buy ships in general. But the price is too much. I checked an inflation calculator and $70 in 2013 is $77.46 today. So the stand and the new deco adds almost twice the price. The only explanation I can think of, is Hasbro doesn't want the price of the Amazon exclusive to go to zero. They're actually looking out for collectors. They won't be $300 or even worth $150, but they'll still remain more valuable than when it was released even factoring inflation.
-
Glad you got a good one JDeck ..mine is the only bad one i have seen, just my luck lol :(

I don't know if this is the case with yours, but I physically had to pull the canopy into the tabs fit into place. Don't be afraid to manhandle the SOB to get it right. With some finesse, you can't go HULK on it, and rip the hinge, but easy, with some force. The canopy is the biggest problem. A hard, stable top hinge would be fantastic. Why even have Han Solo in Carbonite fit into the top? Put him in the cargo hold like the man said. It's the most obvious sentence ever uttered in Star Wars history. No, we can't do that, put captain Solo in the most inconvenient place on the entire ship. This is why I prefer models.
-
I betcha Bandai has a scale that just rocks.
Still not hearing too many good things about this incarnation of this ship. Its mainly what you get for the cost.

Thanks for the tip, i will have another crack at it later
