Title: FialaFernbrugg's tips n tricks ("make your own figure packaging" tutorial)
Post by: FialaFernbrugg on December 11, 2009, 09:40:24 AM
Here you have a little guidance for the E-11 and DC-15 blaster with fully extended stock.

You need:
super glue
cutter knife
wire (one with a diameter of 0,5mm and one with a diameter of 1mm)
paints: black and grey (for a drybrush)
and of course the weapons

production steps:
1.) at first cut of the molded stock
2.)you need three wire pieces and the small plastic part from the molded stock
3.)glue the wire pieces on the weapon
4.)I also made a new sight with the thin wire
5.)at last paint the weapon and make a drybrush

I also made a YouTube video:

lol, that would be very nice

I think steve makes a 1:1 scale E-11 blaster with foldable stock.

That wouldn't be that hard to make it foldable, using a pin-vice and some thin guage craft wire. It would be delicate though.

Self-made bases

Some of my figures in my collection don't stand. I tried to make my own figure-bases and here you have the result. They are quiet simple to make if you have the right tools.

You need:
*electric drill or hand drill
*drill with a diameter of 2,5mm
*wood (about 5 and 10mm thick)
*wood glue and glue
*cotton swabs
*saw
*hammer
*set square, compass and pencil
*cutter knife
*paint and brush
*sandpaper

construction guidance:
1.) Draw the molds that you want with the set square, the compass and the pencil on the wood.
2.) Cut the bases with the saw out of the wood.
3.)Sand the wood
4.)Stick the single parts with the wood glue together
5.)Mark the position of the figure you want with the pencil on the base
6.)Drill two holes for the cotton swabs in the base
7.)Put the cotton swabs in the holes (use the hammer for this)
8.)Paint the stand in the colours you wish
9.)And finally put the name of the figure and some symbols on the base (I just print them out on normal paper)

I hope that will help you to make your own bases for your figures

and here is the YouTube video for this construction guidance:

those are very cool.  Alot better than my 20 or so gi-joe stands hot glued to a makeshift rack! lol.

have you ever thought about doing a large set of "shelves" or one long mini dio in a way that it'd display several figures all together?

FA-3 flechette launcher

Hey guys, just a little construction guidance for a custom FA-3 flechette launcher. It is the weapon of the EVO-Trooper.

material:
*shear
*cutter knife
*cardboard
*ARC-Trooper weapon (you need the butt)
*adhesive tape
*super glue
*brush
*cotton swabs
*paints: black dull and silver (for the drybrushing)
*some plastic

workflow:
1.) cut 3 cotton swabs to a lenght of  40mm and put them with the adhesive tape together.
2.) cut a piece out of the cardboard (about 7x7mm) bend it and glue it on the adhesive tape
3.) cut two circles out of the cardboard. One with a diameter of 7mm and one with 5mm.
4.) now stick all single parts of the weapon together
5.) after that glue a little plastic piece on the weapon (that is the handle)
6.) at last paint the weapon and drybrush it

thats it

custom stand for your Eta-2 Actis Jedi Starfighter

Here you have a construction guidance for your own Jedi Starfighter stand.

tools/materials:
*a wood plate about 5mm thick
*wood sticks diameter 12 and 14mm
*saw
*wood glue
*sandpaper
*electric drill with drills diameter 1,5mm, 12mm and 14mm
*set square, pencil and compass
*wire (cut it to a length of 45mm)
*and two cotton bud pieces (both with a length of 15mm)

workflow:
1.) cut two wood sticks (12mm diameter) to a length of 85mm
2.) cut a 5x5mm clearance in both sticks
3.) after that you need a wood stick with a length of 65mm and a diameter of 14mm
4.) cut a 8x10mm clearance in this stick and drill a hole (1,5mm) below the clearance
5.) now put the wire through this hole and bend it a little bit after that put the cotton bud pieces over the wire
6.) cut two discs out of the 5mm wood plate. One with a diameter of 165mm and one with a diameter of 175mm.
7.) stick the discs together
8.) now drill three holes in the discs. One with a diameter of 14mm and two with a diameter of 12mm.
9.) the last parts are two little attachment parts also made of wood
10.) now you can stick all single parts together
11.) the last step is to paint the stand. I made for example a stand for Darth Vader's Sith Starfighter

Some pics are made with Unigraphics NX4. If you have questions fell free to post.

I made also a YouTube vid with more information:

One of the reasons I don't buy too many smaller vehicles is that they don't have a nice way to display them outside of a giant hangar diorama.

Utapau ground

Today I tried to make a ground-guideline for the base for my 212th AT-RT custom. I made it with the sketch tool of UG Nx4.
The painting was quiet simple. I used some coloured pencils and made a drybrushing with black and grey. Now I need a good background to make a nice dio for my AT-RT and driver.
If you have plans to make a small Utapau custom or  just want something for your 212th Clones, I can send you a PDF file with two differnt sizes of this ground.

Some weathering techniques

I started a new custom today and wanted to show you some of the weathering techniges which I use on my customs.

1.) sanding
When you are finished with the painting of your product you can remove some of the paint with a very fine sandpaper.
This is a very easy way to bring a nice weatherd look to your custom.

2.) wash
Washing refers to diluting paint to an almost water consistency. You basically want it to look and run like dirty water or thinner. With this, you can run it into the panel lines or detail areas of a piece to help bring them out or make weather spots. This is done through several different methods. If you want an overall dirty look, liberally apply the wash all over the model. It will pool in some areas and flow into others. This should give you an overall grungy dirty look.

3.) dry brushing
It can be used lightly to bring out the details of something, or heavily to make something look grungy and dirty. dry brushing is done by loading up the paintbrush with the paint you want to use and then getting rid of most of it. Just wipe the brush on a paper towel until pretty much nothing is coming off of the brush anymore. Then, swipe the brush over the area you want to detail. It should pick out the raised details with the little remaining paint and help them stand out.
When you mix dry brushing  and a dark washing you should always use light colours for the dry brushing.

You can find these and some other tips on this awesome site:

Post by: Clonehead on February 19, 2010, 10:33:47 AM
Nice tips, Fila. Yeah, sometimes when applying a wash, I will just brush it on and leave it and others, I will brush it on and then remove all but what resides in the cracks or recessed areas with a paper towel or tissue.

I finished today a custom base for a new custom figure. This time I used again wood and also a shaft sealing. The grass is from "NOCH" which I glued on with a woog glue/water mix. All in all a nice little base for my next custom which I will post in the next days.

DC-17 M SNIPER RIFLE ATTACHMENT

Here is my custom siper attachment for the RC DC-17m blaster.
Basic weapon was of course a DC-17 blaster. The barrel is made of wire, a cotton bud and a small piece of plastic. I also used some parts from an droid blaster on the side of the weapon. The sight(s) is made of wire and  clear plastic.

every package from Austria to the UK up to 1kg is about 13,50€.
The smaller stands are for free only the shipping and the price for the bigger stands (like the republic style base or the sandwolve base) is 3€+shipping.
of course paypal only and advance payment

but for the first two bases I sent to you (Zulu and Sandwolves) I only take the shipping money 13,50€, the bases are for free mate

tutorial
make your own figure packaging (shown by the example Endor AT-AT Driver on TLC card)

As promised a short tutorial about homade figure packaging.

First, the material list:
•two HASBRO figure packing (for example 2010 TLC)
•a sharp knife (be careful!)
•glue
•a computer (MS Word and Paint)
•scissors
•a color printer/scanner
•paint and brush
•a bowl with water and detergent
•clear protective film (self-adhesive)

Estimated cost per card: ~2€

The first step is to seperate the plastic bubble cleanly from the card. Use the sharp knife for this step (plz be careful!).

The second plastic bubble needs to be resolved without damage, here is the card destroyed.

The plastic bubble needs to be cleaned after the removal of the card (don’t use aggressive detergent)

Now we get to design the card.
The AT-AT Driver portrait on the front is handpainted. I used standard Revell enamel paints, a fine brush and Warhammer decals for the design of the card. It is important to note the drying time of the paint.

The images on the back are printed in the appropriate size for the card. I used a McQuarrie concept picture of the Endor landing platform cause the Endor AT-AT driver is only a concept as well.

Both images are glued on the card. I used clear protective film for a better protection.

The nameplate with the barcode was prepared by the same principle.
The nameplate was scanned and then edited with MS Word.

Now the time has come to bring all parts together.
Please note that the drying time of the adhesive is very important (~1 or 2 days). I used clothes pins for the fixation of the plastic bubble.

Christoph I can sure see the pictures now and spent quite a good bit of time going over your tutorial again and again and it is just amazing to see how this was done.

I plan to print this on my good printer at work and then keep a working journal with the figure.

I would sure love to see a youtube video of this and how you created the great custom Endor AT-AT Driver figure with speical weapon too. It really is just a fantastic work of art and I wanted to thank you again for it. I don't care if I get any xmas presents this year as this just made my holiday!

On the front page with this by the way. I have a feeling the thread views for this are gonna go up by the thousands!

I cannot believe what I just saw. Christoph, I wrote you in the last mail that I am running out of words, but no I am not sure if I feel like a heart attack or not.

This project is just unbelievanble! There are so many differnent ways to create custom figures and you did an awesome job. For me it looks like a real Hasbro product. Wait for another week and you will have an offer from Hasbro to work for their production section.

I am so amazed I need something to drink...this just beats me off my chair. What do you think about an Clone Assasin on card?
Wouldn't that be amazing?!

By now I have collected quite a few ideas and material, and I can't wait to return to Germany. I will tell you later on. Next week I have to write my final exams at high school. That's the reason why I was inactive on the Shipyards...

It's  a little disadvantage being a student, but I do my best to find some time for myself, too...Next up I will hunt the next Vintage wave of Return of the Jedi. All the People here are mad hunting deer...:D I prefer hunting Hasbro's great figures!!

Shawn: Thanks for the fp and also the "creation of the week" award. The YouTube video will follow next weekend.

Philipp: Thanks a lot for your comment my friend. A Clone Assassin packaging is a great idea. I'll think about that.

artilarytrooper321: with a very sharp craft knife

Ron: No problem. I'm looking forward to see first pics of the first hemble custom packaging.
Maybe a nice idea for a 2011 contest.

Fiala,  Amazing work!!   Words can't describe how impressed I am with this.  It makes me want to take the time to do that for every custom I make!   The overall effect of the custom and identifying exactly what it is, is just awesome.  One of these days I am going to have to try this.   Which leads me to a question . . . . .
Are you saying that you remove the bubble, without damaging the picture it is glued to, with a knife?

Thank you!!
