Title: AT AT parts please!!
Post by: customcloner on December 22, 2008, 03:21:39 PM
Im looking for the cockpit cover, side mounted guns, and side door...everything but the walker its self!! lol
I can cast the parts if needed but the guns having the spring for firing the rockets is not possible so these are the most important I guess, but will take the others if possible to find!!

John I will be glad to send you the parts to cast if you go down that line. It is almost impossible to find potf atat parts unless you just buy a junked one on ebay and they don't show up to often for prices that are decent. I will see what I can find though. I usually look for decent atat deals every chance I get. I sure appreciated the help  you gave me the one time to get my potf atat complete! I just shot one of the  missles for my kids yesterday!

Good luck, you will need it... Always same parts are missing...   :-[

I have the endor atat to use for casting but appreciate the offer Tamer, The only problem will be the guns... any little opening and the mold material will seep through and ruin the original.  Most likely Im going to mold the hood and side door so when Im finished If anyone needs these same parts Ill be happy to duplicate more. As these parts are missing from so many and are so hard to find!!

That is awesome news John. I for one will probably need some help with these parts as I am planning on upgrading my walker collection once I clear out some rubbermaid!

I probably should of made a new thread.... but Im looking for anyone who has any extra turrets that come with the aotc pilot.

I could use some of those also. I had contemplated taking one apart to mold the componants but am having troubles getting the globe apart.

Its a little tricky but dont worry Im in the processes of molding mine. After posting looking for the turrets I took the parts off my ship and Im already ahead of you!! As soon as I cast I have you some in the mail. Ok?

Way to go guys. Just make what you need! John you can help Clint make me a McQaurrie concept walker!

Cool deal, John. You are the man!!
A concept walker, Tamer? Holy cow! That would take a sizable dio! ;D

Ok , just waiting on the molds to dry. They should be good to cast by later tonight or first thing in the morning. I molded all 4 parts the controls the swivel that connects the control handles to the main shaft, the shaft and the dish looking piece on the front of the globe ( you called it the firing mechanism) Also Clint, I found a good way to make sure you minimize on the air-bubbles dooring the casting processes... When I made the missiles for Tamer's ATAT the mold was so narrow inside that the resin would set up before it reached the bottom of the mold so I used one of my kids medicine syringes being it had a some what long nozzle. After mixing the resin I sucked it up in the syringe like I would the medicine and put the nozzle at the bottom of the mold and filled it from the bottom up. It worked perfect, up until that point I had six failed attempts with the missiles. Even for the helmets it cut down to only having to cast them once even the difficult ones. I know your thinking about the syringe "Clean-up" Right before it hardens inside the nozzle I take a piece of wire and push it back out. Then taking a pair of narrow scissors or a small flat screw-driver and the resin pops clear off!

I had often thought of some sort of resin injection process for that problem but was worried about the resin in the nozzel hardening up. I may have to try that buddy. Thanks for the tip.
did you cast the globe pieces also. That was the part that I couldnt get apart. in pieces, it would take alot less resin to cast.

Wow John, I sure do appreciate the missles you made. I shoot one a week, even if the walker doesn't need it! Thanks for casting those for me!

I am anxious to see how these turned out.  Having those pieces would be cool to do some blown up walker scenes. That is if you believe walkers can be blown up.
Title: Re: AT AT parts please!!

I do believe that with enough fire power, a walker might be blown up but I thought he was refering to a battle damaged gunship.

I want an ATAT like this proto that was made in 85-86 to help revitalize the line but was never produced.
I found this image in a folder full of unproduced protos and designs at theswca.com.
As a custom, this beast wouldn't be too hard to make and appears to be sporting the cannon from the vintage Death Star playset.

Anything is possible, my friend! I was thinking of trying a smaller version with one of my ATAT walker model kits.
I love the weathered look of this one.

I think Wayne showed me that pic a few years ago. I have been salivating hoping to get something like this, but alas a custom guy I am not. We can only hope this new supersized walker will get off the ground!

I think that I just had an epiphany about this. What if you were to use the cockpit with gun from the Clone Wars ATAP and converted it to be a rotating armored turret for our flatbed ATAT? I wonder if someone could photo shop those two together to see how it would look.

wood I can do a bit as long as it is not too small a dimension. This fine detail stuff I just don't have the hands for trust me!

Now your ATAP idea is quite interesting. I bet it would look good. I am not sure I have the photoship skills to do that though. Pat might!

My photo shop skills are the same way, buddy. I could pull it off but it might take a couple of hours of trial and error.
I would be better off trying to sketch it.

Hey Clint, Im just now catching up on past post Iv missed... I have made molds for those parts for the turrets but couldnt finish the castings with the resin I have. I tried but the resin base was no good from sitting. Will get them to you shortly, I havent forgot. Also those ammo pouches and pistols & holsters as well!

I have a bunch of  the big single and small double pouches. Also on the atrt driver gun strap I molded the bullets and the I believe its a detonator...mabe??  Have plenty of everything but holsters and pistols, may have a few Ill have to check on them to be shore.  I have to ship out some items for ebayers tomorrow so Ill send you what I have for now and get the rest to you when I get more resin.

Much obliged, John. Like I said, there was no coupon in the paper this week but there will be next week I'll bet.
I can pick up some resin next week for you if you need.
The pistols are easier to come by now as there is one in every legacy legends gear locker, now. The holsters are the part that I was really looking for though and the other stuff sounds great to me. I will have to fix you up with my latest castings when I send the resin.

Thats cool! The pistols are a bit harder to cast than the holsters but can if ever need more. Especially now using the syringe I have less defects. That pic. you posted of the atat is cool. It dosnt look to complicated, did you find any pics. of it from any other angles?? It would be easier to asses with a pic. from the top or back looking down at the additions to see if theres any others we cant see.

That's cool buddy. I need to try your syringe tecnique.
Sorry John but as far as I know, that is the only pic of that Walker that exists. I am convinced that I need to make something like it in one scale or another with one of my Walker model kits.

That would be a good start to see how it would turn out first, before cutting up a full size atat.

What I need to find to make this happen is that laser turret from the vintage Death Star Playset. "that is the same gun, right?" If you can find one of those to send with the walker, I will try it.
It might not be impossible to find that gun on ebay in a vintage part auction.
Can anyone find us a pic of that gun so we can see if it is the same?
Title: Re: AT AT parts please!!
Post by: Clonehead on February 28, 2009, 11:16:11 AM
I found these two pics of the Death Star Playset gun and it's side seat mount at 12back.com
The barrel of the gun differs slightly from the one mounted an the atat but the rest of it appears to be the same. That trooper by the gun in the walker could be sitting in that same side seat. Modifying the death star gun to look like the one in the walker photo would be alot easier than trying to scratchbuild the whole thing.

Update: I added another pic of the chair mount from an ebay auction

What do you casting experts think about casting that death star gun? Would it look right or would it be impossible to do?

A big piece like that would be too large to do in a one piece mold, I would think. I have never tried a two piece mold yet but I think that it would cost too much in materials to be worth it. It would take a lot of resin to cast that gun and at least three times as much mold material with the stuff that I use.

I suppose that I could suspend either side of the gun over the mold box, pour it halfway up the gun's side, and make two one-piece molds to cast either half of the gun and then glue the two halves together but we are still talking about $30-$40 of mold making materiel, I would think. That's just for the gun and not the side-chair mount. Also,That's not including the resin.
Surely there is a swap meet somewhere where we could find this stuff. I will have to check the other online selling sites like Yahoo and the like. It's that or scratchbuild city!

Surely we can find the chairs and the guns for less than fourty bucks. We might have to see if we can get Wayne on this one.  He can start the chase and would know if we were getting good vintage and not repro stuff.

Yep, Wayne might be the guy to ask. With his vintage focus, he might have a knack for finding older parts like these.
I wouldn't mind repro parts if they were of a good quality but if you don't want repros, we won't use em.

Personally I could care less if they were repro, but depending on price it might be just as good to try to find real vintage ones. I will see if I can get Wayne to bite on this, but I know he would prefer all vintage if we were gonna get this off the ground.  I guess if we could find real vintage I would send you my vintage walker, if its repro I would send my potf one. Either way it would be daggone nice.

I think it looks awesome and can only imagine what you could create. I am starting to get excited Clint, but I am trying to contain myself.  I probably won't get that excited until I start cutting into that walker's hull.
It would be kind of like watching surgery on a loved one, eh Tamer?
Yep, I'll need to do some cutting, fitting, visualization, and troubleshooting to see how everything will work, then I will get excited.

Hey parts casting guys I need an opinion on how to replace the opening cockpit canopy on a vintage at-at I just bought on ebay. It is missing most of the front items and I can find the guns and the bulb cover easily enough, but I do not see any cockpit canopies on the bay right now. What are the chances of casting a part that is this big? Unrealistic? Or would I be better off trying to buy a trashed walker just for the canopy?
Title: Re: AT AT parts please!!
Post by: Clonehead on March 18, 2009, 02:57:39 PM
There you go with those huge cast part requests, buddy. If I had a canopy to make a mold or molds of, I would cut the sides off, and make 3 molds of it, to be assembled later. Material wise, it couldnt be done for less than $30 and I'm sure that you could find a canopy loose on ebay for less than that.
I can't even remember what this part is shaped like, it's been so long since I've had one.
Title: Re: AT AT parts please!!
Post by: Tamer on March 18, 2009, 04:50:58 PM
I was afraid it would be difficult and then cost that much in material. I will have to see if I can find one on the bay and pounce on it when I do. If you guys see one I would appreciate an assist. I could paypal immediately.

Segnett and I just picked up kind of a junker on EBay, bones seem to be pretty intact, but it is missing its cockpit cover, the chin guns, and possibly more, but still, it'll be a place holder til he can get his kid a complete one, :)

its the vintage one to boot!

I got my last one of the bay for ten bucks if you can believe it and then had to piece it together. It took me awhile, but it is in good shape now.
