Title: Mos Eisley Cantina
Post by: Psyclone on November 01, 2010, 05:10:51 PM
I'm starting a new thread for my Cantina project.  This has been in the works for some time now and I just got around to updating it recently. It's just about  ready for the final paint and then I'll begin working on the interior furniture and whatnot.

The layout is obviously not screen accurate and there are reasons for this.  Some are intentional and others were mistakes.  Back when I started this project a few years ago I intended on making the "vintage" version using the layout design in the Star Wars Technical Journal . After the basic layout was created I then decided to adopt some of the details from the later interpretations including the dome with hitching rings.  Anyway, instead of starting over and redesigning the entrance I decided to just do what I could with what I had.  After I was finished I didn't mind how it turned out as much as I thought I would.

There are plenty of things I would change, other than the layout, if I ever made another one of these.  I would definitely  change the materials because I mostly used floral and hobby foam which is insanely expensive. Toward the end of the project I switched to Home Depot foam board insulation which was much cheaper. Also, I'd go with a different texture if I had it to do again. Actually, it might bug me so much that I redo the texture for this version but if I did it wouldn’t be for a while.

Here are some of the new photos.  You can see more info on my website which is in my signature.

Thanks, I'm glad you like it.  It's for 3 3/4" figures.

:o now this is a huge project!
looks fantastic! love the details seen so far and the texture & layout. And to me making something screen accurate is not the point (though this can be a intention, too), making something that could be right out of the movie is far more exciting, and your dio definitelly is an exciting one!

Looks great.  What did you use for the dome portion?

For those interested, and quite possibly everyone who's posted here knows this anyway; but 3.75" scale is about 1/19 scale--so most folks probably wouldn't notice the difference when mixing items of 1/18 and the 3.75" (1/19) scales.  Six foot guys are just a quarter inch shorter in 3.75" scale.

Looks great.  What did you use for the dome portion?

For the dome I used a 10" diameter craft foam ball.

Yes, 72 divided by 18 equals 4. So a 6' tall 1/18 scale man would be 4" tall. So a 3 3/4 scale guy is close to 1/19 scale. 72 inches divided by 19 equals 3.789, and that is pretty darn close to 3.75. I like to buy 1/18 scale vehicles for 3 3/4 figures because it looks more realistic. Also 1/18 scale figures are usually cheesy looking. This mostly pertains to military/G.I.Joe figures and vehicles. For example I recently bought a 1/18 scale Bradley fighting vehicle for my Joes because Hasbro doesn't make any armored vehicles that look the right size. They're all small even for 3 3/4 scale. I guess it's not that Hasbro doesn't know what they're doing it's that they are trying to cut costs. Which is so lame because it's not like they're going out of business or anything. If they started making more realistic or slightly bigger vehicles more people would buy them!

Thanks to all on the comments so far.    This baby has been a long time coming and I'm happy it's in the last stages.  What's left is the bar area, center part of the roof and roof doodads, doors, windows, furniture, decorations, figures and final weathering.  I think I will be adding lighting to it as well but I'm going to wait until I finish everything else first.

Are you in possesion of all the figures for this "baby".

I have some stock figures that will be from the film and I'm working on getting some that I don't have.  There will also be quite a few customs thrown in there to fill it out.

EDIT:  Of course, if anyone has any spare figures or parts they'd like to donate I'd gladly accept them ;)   Or, any heads and hands I could use to cobble some aliens together with some of the body parts I have.  Let me know.

Also, I'd go with a different texture if I had it to do again. Actually, it might bug me so much that I redo the texture for this version but if I did it wouldn’t be for a while.

Perhaps if looks different in person, but from your photos, I think the texture looks superb.  In fact, I'm interested in knowing what you used.  Also, if you did redo it, what would you use instead?

And CloneSniper78, I thought your input on scales was informative and interesting--I certainly had no problem with it.  (If I did, I'd need to apologize for my input too.)   :)

It does look a little different in person.  What I used was regular spackle.  I don't mind too much but I prefer some other textures that I've seen.  Here is a link to a site where I really like what this customizer has done with the  Mos Eisley environments and would like to imitate it.  He makes some really cool stuff for Galactic Heroes and other miniatures but I really like his Tatooine textures and paint apps. http://www.ironhands.com/mos.htm (http://www.ironhands.com/mos.htm).

Hey Psyclone, if you could be so kind to post what figures you were planning to put in the cantina then we could all try to fill in the gaps. Also, I'm pretty sure the old Power of the Force line had some cantina packs that had two or more figures in each one. Maybe Tamer has some. I think he's got a nice POTF collection he was trying to unload. I know that bartender guy is kind of rare. I think it would be cool if we all banded together to make this dio as good as it can be. SPREAD THE WORD EVERYBODY! Thank you.

I will put that list of figs I have together and post it tomorrow night along with a list of figures I'm looking to buy if anyone has any to spare.  Again, if anyone just has spare bodies or body parts that you want to unload I might be able to cobble some aliens together to help populate it.  Or, if you have some full customs that were just taking up space and you want to donate, that's cool too.

I've begun work on the cantina furniture.   After fooling around with a few different ways of creating the chairs I think I've settled on balsa wood and sheet styrene.  No matter what, it's going to be a difficult and monotonous task making all the chairs I need but this went the fastest and I liked the results best.  I still have some problems with it but it will do, I think.  Anyway, here it is...

After quite a bit of whittling I have some cantina chairs.  They are just about finished  I just need to give them a black wash.  They were created using balsa wood and sheet styrene.  The sheet styrene was applied using a glue gun. The color is raw sienna.

Thanks.  If anyone has a Dannik Jerrico that won't break my bank that would be great.  He's not easy to hunt down for less than 15 bucks.  Might have to cave at some point but it would be nice if anyone has an extra loose one they want to part with.

Good job Psyclone. Are your hands sore? Is that the VOTC Han?

Working with balsa wood is pretty easy going.  Messy, but easy on the hands. Yes, I think that's VOTC Han. I just have his "glove hands" on in this photo.

I think I can get you a loose Wioslea reasonable.

Wioslea would be great.

lol, thanks.

Can I say it again?  Amazing!

Are you making benches, or just chairs?

I'd love to know what you're doing for tables.

I was originally going to make benches because that's what I assumed was in the alcoves and I've seen other customizers make them, however,  I think I'm going to go the chairs-put-together route because the only shot that I saw clearly of the seating inside the alcoves was when Greedo forced Han to sit down at gunpoint and you can see that there are two chairs put together and not a bench.  Also, it's easier to just move single chairs around if you want to place them somewhere else.

As for the tables, I bought a bunch of plumbing collars and caps to make tables but I ended up giving up on that for a few reasons.  I decided to go with the cantina table that comes with Pons Limbic with a little adjustment.  I need quite a few of them but a fellow ISY member, and a master caster, is looking into what it would cost to make a bunch of these for me.  When I hear back from him with some numbers and whether he has the time to do it I will post some of those when they are ready.

Absolutely phenomenal update to the bar area.  Your building skills are quite evident, Psyclone. This dio is going to rock the house!

Actually, thanks to Doc, these are casts and maybe only one IG88 was sacrificed.  I will be posting some other items The Doc sent me (cantina tables) as soon as I settle on a color.

And thankfully, the head didn't even have to be sacrificed - just borrowed.

This just looks better and better every update.  I can't wait to see what you're going to do next!

I have been dragging my feet for years about doing a cantina at this point.  I have all the figures, I just really need some tables, chairs, and IG-88 heads to make this happen.  Your posts keep my thirst for cantina goodness quenched.

Thanks.  Talk to Doc about the tables and IG heads.  That's where I got mine.

I responded to your PM but I will repost what I sent to you here so others can see.

Funny you ask, I've been really busy the last several months so I hadn't been able to get to my projects but recently I have had some time and I've been making great progress with the Cantina in the last week .  I did a bit of a redesign but I think it will be completed in a week or so.

Good to hear you are still building. I can't wait to see what you have done to some of your builds in general.

Like that great new Tie you were working on.

I'll probably always be building it's just the pace that slows down because of a number of things.  I wish I had more time to dedicate to it but family responsibilities, money for supplies etc… get in the way.  I have a little bit of free time lately after all the summer related stuff is coming to an end so I hope to make some great leaps toward completing a few projects.

Like that great new Tie you were working on.

That is next on the list after the Cantina.  I really want to finish that by the end of the year.  I am waiting to get the parts I need for the wings which are a bit pricey.

As for the Cantina, I did a bit of a redesign so I actually have two versions of it now. They are very similar but I changed the layout of the rooms and walls slightly.  I did this because I wasn't satisfied with the roof/wall configuration I had and also I was able to pick up the materials (foam and spackle) for a pretty good price. I'll be posting some images soon (I hope). Now that I have two of these beasts I am thinking about putting the newer version up for sale or maybe on auction at ebay once it's finished and use that money to buy more materials to finish my other projects and free up some work space. I doubt I'll even come close to getting back what I've put into it but we'll see how it goes.
