My first offering is a selection of Wall Decal Sheets that I've been using to create different sets for the Darkchild Photonovel.
I'll be adding more decals to this set over the coming weeks.
Here is the link to the set: http://www.flickr.com/photos/30029551@N06/sets/72157622123586494/
You may need to re-size the images using either a photo editing package or you could simply paste the images onto a Word document. I use A4 sticker paper (one sticker per sheet) that can be purchased at any office supply retailer. Make sure that you re-size the image so that it fits correctly onto an A4 sized sheet, pop the sticker sheets into your printer and away you go. I then apply the decals onto mount board or foamcore.
-
My next offering (and this will be the last for this week) is the Decal set used to build my Yavin Base playset.
You'll find all the decals needed to create a really fun set for the kids, and the bonus, it's flat pack. I used Duck Tape to fix the panels so that the walls simply fold together. The floor is a seperate piece in 2 halves, again duck taped at the back so that it can fold in half and be stored away when not in use.
ALl you need to create the playset is 3 large pieces of Mount Board, a sharp craft knife, a long metal ruler, a large cutting mat, scissors, duck tape or invisible tape, A4 sticker sheets and a enough ink in your printer. Once you have purchased the tools you can make more of these modular dioramas. I'll be posing more decal sheets that will allow you to build other playsets in due course.
Here is a link to the decal set: http://www.flickr.com/photos/30029551@N06/sets/72157615692395496/
Here are my images of the Playset in action:

And here is and image showing 1/2 of the set (I decided to make it twice the size so that it would fit the Falcon as well....

Here it is all folded flat:

Hi folks and fellow Shipyarders, I hope you are all having a good day!
I have been racking my brains trying to figure out how to build a simple Jedi Temple set for the photonovel and last night I finally cracked it. So rather than keep it to myself I have published the Decal sheets and have made a quick film showing you how I put it all together...simples!
So without further adoo, here is the link to the movie: http://www.youtube.com/user/hangarbay94
And here is the link to the decals: http://www.flickr.com/photos/30029551@N06/sets/72157622158115560/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/30029551@N06/sets/72157622158115560/)
If you have come here from Youtube, welcome...I would recommend anyone who is into Star Wars stuff to have a good look around this fantastic site, my favourite forums are the Customs and Diorama's.
I'll be posting more decal sheets as soon as the next chapter of Darkchild is released, maybe earlier, you'll just have to keep an eye out on this post.
Have fun!
-
sweet i like your custom shadow troopers ;D
-
Just watched your youtube video.... WOW, dude, you're killing me with your photography and photoshop skills. This is the best work I've seen yet. You really have an incredible eye for lighting scenes and choosing angles. I am totally impressed!
-
I would like to say once again, really excellent job, and thanks for sharing this with us.
-
hey what paint do you use for customizeing clones i use testors paint
-
You make it look so *easy*!! LOL I'll be in the vicinity of a Hobby Lobby (coincidentally, in the same shopping center as an Office Depot) tomorrow, I may try and talk Rebe into scooting on into town for a quick shopping trip.
now - ya gotta do a tutorial on how to modify a great design ya find on the web!
-
Ok, Doc that sounds like a good idea...
I just need to find out how to record what's going on on screen while I'm working with Photoshop.
All the best,
Jules
-
Man, those decal images are awesome! I'm totally going to have to print those out for some dioramas, and now I know how to make my own diorama backgrounds, I was thinking I was going to have to sculpt / paint any that I wanted! This will be lots easier, thanks Jules!
-
Oh yeah, front page bound on this one, I am so behind in my threads. This one just rocks. Thanks Jules for taking the time to do this! Man, if you do any of this via Youtube too post the links here and I will get those vids up fp as quick as I can.
-
Ok, I watched the video and loved the how to. Now I am full of questions for my desired motiff. If I may ask a few questions, and please disregard if no questions are alllowed here.
1. I am eager to know what type of printer you use? I would love to buy one now and experiment. I would love to buy at least the same brand you are using and would love for you to comment on the one you use.
2. Have you done any Winter environment scenes or any snow type applications? I am thinking of a Hoth environment with some ship type flooring and wall scenes and am wondering if you have seen anything like this?
-
Tamer, I love questions!
In answer to your first question about printers, I use an Epson All-in-One DX9400F. As I work from home a printer-Fax-Scanner combination suits me best, although I'm not sure if it's the best printer for the job.
It uses a 4-ink cartridge system so it can be very pricey printing off loads of decal sheets. I'd look at printer reviews for a combination of the best colour rendering versus cost per copy. I used to print the decals in the highest quality setting, now I have reverted to the standard setting, and I haven't really noticed a significant drop in quality but the print speed has increased massively and I use far less ink per copy.
The key to saving money is to print just what you need. I once built one of Niub Niubs Death Star's and had loads of wasteage, now I am far more careful.
Re the second question: It's funny that you should ask me about a Hoth Diorama because that was what got me into all this stuff right from the start. A couple of years ago I saw "The Professor's" hoth Diorama over at Yakface here is the link: http://www.yakfaceforums.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=589 (http://www.yakfaceforums.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=589). He used polystyrene packaging to build what I consider the best diorama ever created for Star Wars figures. It may not be the most accurate or technically challenging piece, but for sheer ingenuity and "I want one of those" factor, it wins hands down. I've never seen better.
Unfortunately I don't think it would be possible to recreate the Hoth setting using flat surfaces, snow and ice require texture and I wouldn't even attempt it with card or foamcore.
As a rule I make stuff that can be stored out of the way, all of my stuff folds flat and lives in the corner of my office now, a Hoth playset would demand a large space and so I would have to hand you over to The professor for inspiration.
I'd love to build a Hoth Set one day, but I'm having so much fun with my novel that I suspect you'll be seeing me here for many years to come doing much of the same stuff I'm doing now. A bit like those guys who, after 10 years are still working on stuff for X-Wing Alliance.
As always Tamer I am so grateful for the opportunity to display my work here and it is a total pleasure to be in everyone's company here. I am only too happy to answer any questions...

I will give that Hoth dio a look.
As far as printers, I am shopping now for a good all in one I can use at work. I have about a two hundred dollar budget and want to find a good one there and then buy one for my home later. Perhaps this Epson is the one to look for.
-
I might need to use some of these patterns to create a diorama. Great selection, by the way.
-
I just took a few moments to look at the Professor's Hoth dio. Lets just say my jaw dropped. What great work, I would love to see that dude show up over here. Thanks for the link Jules.
-
Tamer, I'm on it!!!
-
I'm here. It's an honor to have been invited! Thanks for looking at my dioramas.
-
Jules, I just caught your latest video, and I must say I am always impressed by you. Your progress, since we first encountered each other, is awe inspiring. And I truly mean that.
You never fail to amaze, and I feel fortunate just to be able to view your tireless efforts.
Always love all you do.
Barry
-
Barry, as always your compliments read like a line from a Shakespear play. All I can say is that if it wasn't for sites like these and guys like you I'd just be watching the Star Wars DVD's once every 6 months or so, like I used to...What am I saying! now I spend a fortune on Star Wars toys, stay up till 3am on a regular basis and lock myself in my shed most of the time...
Thank you for such an articulate and flattering comment.

I'll try to post some soon. It's hard catching up with all the great work here.

Very cool of you to take the time to film that, Jules. I'll point everyone that asks me to your tutorial.

Great stuff.
And easier than I thought for the most part.
Thanks for that.

We will get this up on the fp in bits and starts. This is just an awesome resource.

Just thought I'd show you guys a web site I found with thousands of free sound effects...
Check this out.
http://www.freesound.org/index.php (http://www.freesound.org/index.php)
Go to search and enter the sound you are looking for. I like stuff like drones, war sounds, soundscapes etc.
-
Ok folks as promised here is a link to all of my recourses and wall panel designs that I've been using for the Darkchild Saga. You should find lots of interesting stuff that you can just print onto A4 label paper and make some interesting dioramas.

Oh.
My.
GOD!!!
That is FABULOUS!! Thanks for sharing!
-
You are most welcome!
-
I found some place on ebay that is selling a *carton* of those single-page sticker-sheets (Avery 5165) - a carton is 5 boxes, a box is 100 pages - for $60. That's insanely cheap!!!
/me starts looking for recyclable materials lying around the house...
-
That sounds like a normal price to me...A standard pack at office world contains 100 sheets, I think I pay around £10 a pack...roughly the same kind of money.
-
Wow - y'all get it cheap! I looked up a 100-ct box at WalMart - $25; at Office Depot - $38.
-
Thanks is probably not enough Jules, but what a great service to offer the troopers. I just got a new color printer so I could get one of the sticker sheets and try some of these out. I know you probably aren't taking requests, but I would love to see one of these metal wall or ship wall panels with a big ole Imperial symbol in it sometime. Just great stuff.
-
Much thanks for all of those goodies, Jules!
If I find the time, I wouldn't mind putting some of these to use.
-
Bookmarked, and eager to use!!
I need to make a nice background for my customs when taking pictures and this is the obvious solution. =) HB thanks again!!

Guys, mi casa es tu casa!

Jtrooper, unless you are a bit more specific I can't help. I'll e-mail you the decal sheets maybe that will help. I don;t know if you watched my video, but the pillatrs are just 3 strips of foamcore hotglued together to form a long U shaped structure. Inside the structure are small triangular joints that give added strength.
If you need any further help just PM me...
All the best,
Jules

I seen the decal of the base but what is the decal on top of the base.
On the video was overriden by another video please let me see more pics

JL, here is the link to the video, please can you take a look and let me know at which point I need to look out for.
I'll keep an eye on this post and try to resolve this as soon as possible.

-
Jules,
Thank you for the package I just started to use some of it for a table view screen. Also, how hot do you have to get it to bend. And have you used this stuff
-
JT,
Never tried bending it...
I use polistyrene cement to glue it to surfaces.
-
Jules,
Is tht what your Endor platform landing pad has on it
-
Jules,
Is tht what your Endor platform landing pad has on it
JT, Yes, I've clad the top and sides in it and also parts of the gantry's and the whole centre gantry.
-
HB94,
Did you add decals to them or paint them yourself. The reason I'm asking I am going to re dew the Top platform and also the Gantry's a little. I'm also going to add a Elevator in my cilo
-
JT, I did both.
The walkways and door are decals, all the rest is paint.

What program do you use to make your slide shows or mini- movies

What program do you use to make your slide shows or mini- movies
Plain old Windows Movie Maker....It's probaly the simplest to use of all and it's free. Only problem I've experienced with it is system slowdown, so your pc needs to be up for it if you place a lo of demands on the software. I can d a movie mking tutorial if you like?
-
That would be awesome. I'm trying to start a mini- movie I started using nero but it will not go to a file just a burn DVD
-

Where do u=you get the music for the background videos
-
They are just tunes I have in my music collection.
Music has always been a passion of mine and often I hear a track and I know It'll be great for a video. If you are looking for music there is a great program called Last FM, once installed it listens to any music you play on either iTunes or Windows Media Player andthen makes recommendations for music you'd like. It also does the same with any artist or track you enter into it. Also Web Radio is a great program for just expanding your music listening.
Another interesting program is WavePad, it's a free, easy to use piece of software that can cut, mix and alter music tracks. It woorks in a similar way to Movie Maker.
-
Jules brillant work on the decals they have so much detail in them it's amazing.

Hey, Jules need to ask a question how do you Isolate the figures in a picture do you use green screen or not. You showed us how to bring pictures for backdrops on your thread. I just need the secret of how you get the figures by themselves.
-
Jt,
I'm not sure what you mean??? Are you referring to Photoshop? If you are, no I don't use a blue/green screen, I tried it, but it lft risidual colour on the gloss surfaces.
If you are trying to take shots of figures to edit into other images, what I usually do is photograph them in close up with a distant background. The background usually blurs and so it's relatively easy to use the polygonal lasso tool to cut the figure out of the image.
I hope that made sense. If not PM me and we can discuss it further....
-
Hell Hangarbay 94,
I am new to all this an to tell you the truth your work inspired me to want to start my own, I mean I use to do dioramas as a kid but nothing like the work people are doing today. I would great fully ask if there is any way you could email me some full size picture walls and floors or stuff for your star wars dioramas? anything everything, I got a lot of stuff in mind. Unless you could teach me how to make my own that would be great. Right now I just want to do this one in Revenge of the sith where obi is hanging from that ledge when he is on Utapau. General Grevious is trying to nock obi off. I need the floors, walls and under him, like if obi 1 is about to fall. There is a diorama like this on youtube, but I want to ad a ship and change a few things. I'd love to do the jedi temple like you did, but I wanna start off slow learn the basics and maybe one day I will try it, I could definitely use those floors and walls you did in that. Excellent work. Any way Thank you for your time
Joseph
