As for sturdiness, they are very sturdy as they are 1/8" plywood, not balsa so the strength is there, also they have tabs on them that are screwed into the fiberglass base I formed in the inner hull. By bedding it in glass, it is far stronger than the originals. A pic will follow
As for the intakes, I used a broken landspeeder. I cut the side pods off and halved them. I like these as they blend very well into teh hull. I will be using these on the finished model. The black one wasnlt intended to be a stealth version, rather a prototype, to work out the bugs before the final ship, teh benefit is I will have 2 ships as every pilot needs a wingman
If anyone wants to build one similar I have hardcopy templates I made for the wings and top fin. Hit me up, I can cut some in either wood or in cardboard for use as a teplate for your project.
