NYCC 2021is a much leaner show than previous years.

This is a good thing in this age of the virus, the convention floors are nowhere near as packed as in the past. I can actually get up and down all of the aisles without being constantly jostled and hemmed in by throngs of people.

Oddly, none of the major publishers have any kind of presence in the exhibitors' area. 90% of the exhibitors are anime companies.

There is also very little in the way of free swag. This is kind of disappointing as I always make up goody bags for friends that were unable to attend, but won't have much to do it with this year.

I got some great stuff from NASA though, including a rare physical copy of their new graphic novel (digital download is the primary way to read it) as well as a mission pin from the fictional mission team from the graphic novel :)

Sad to hear it Dan, but not too surprising.

I really enjoyed the Diamond Select and S.H.Figuarts stuff you posted.

Today at NYCC, as I was getting ready to leave a fan stopped me and asked me if I was cosplaying as Chuckles from "G.I.Joe" because of my Hawaiian shirt and the shoulder strap of my messenger bag resembling a shoulder holster LOL

Today was quite a bit more crowded than yesterday, but still far from the volume of previous years.

My prediction for the exclusive with the best possible unforseen popularity in the future is the physical copy of NASA's new graphic novel "First Woman". The only way to get a physical copy is at their booth. It is digital download only otherwise. There is also a very limited metal mission pin that is tied to the fictional mission depicted in the graphic novel. It is not given away freely as they did not make a ton of them. They are given out to people that show a real interest in the project or otherwise impress the booth workers. These items are not high demand like Funko Pops or exclusive covers, so they will fly under the radar for a few years before collectors "discover" how few were actually produced. The graphic novels have an allotted number that are given away per day at the show so not everyone is getting them, another reason I foresee a big demand for them in the future.

With the reduced attendee volume and the lack of big publishers and studios, NYCC 2021 feels like a welcome throwback to the "real" comic conventions of the past. The ones only fans over 30 have experienced. Before the cons went from a gathering of "geeks" to a full on commercial onslaught that drew in the casuals and "normies" ;)

It feels more "intimate" (despite its massive size) and less like a publicity blitz from the big boys in the industry (save for the anime studios, they are out in force). There is also a much higher concentration of actual comic book vendors than past years despite some of the larger ones sitting out the show this year.

Artist Alley was jumping the entire day, which is always a good sign. It looked like many artists were doing brisk business selling prints and original pieces all day long.

I will admit, I miss the hourly free signings at the enormous Dark Horse Comics booth of years past, where I got to meet and talk to creators from across the long history of the medium and struck up a great friendship with Nick Z., my frequent linemate for multiple signings. I miss the multiple bagfuls of free swag I would get each day as well, there would be some real gems in there. But, overall, I am having a blast each day looking at all of the awesome costumed fans and having some great conversations with friends new and old while covering the show :)

Glad you are having a good time Dan. It does look a little smaller than in years past.

Probably because a lot of the big names are missing. Still looks like fun though!

The "Chuckles" question is pretty great. Call it "accidental cosplay." Glad you are having a good time, I'm sure it feels really different from recent experiences, but different can be good. Thanks for sharing your impressions with us.
