The Neti
« on: January 16, 2010, 03:23:45 PM »
INFO: The Neti were a species of shapeshifting sentient plants first encountered on the planet Ryyk. Some called them Ryyk because of the planet's name. Notable Neti included the Jedi Garnoo, Ood Bnar, and T'ra Saa.

RACE: Neti
HEIGHT: 3.5 Meters Tall
SKIN: Brown
DISTINCTION: Plants, shapeshifting abilities, long lived
LANGUAGE: Neti

HOMEWORLD:
Myrkr was a forested world, located fairly close to the galaxy's major population centers. It was the Neti homeworld, although the Neti established a colony on Ryyk some time prior to 4,000 BBY, apparently abandoning Myrkr.

In 3,963 BBY, Myrkr was the site of fighting during the Mandalorian Wars. Myrkr was settled by Humans circa 300 BBY. During the Clone Wars, many pirates, criminals, and bounty hunters hid on Myrkr because the ysalamiri were avoided by the Jedi and it was a perfect place for a base of operations because the high metal content of the flora confused most sensor equipment. Despite its relatively central location, Myrkr was generally ignored by galactic society during the time of the Galactic Republic and the Galactic Empire. The guardian of Nomi Sunrider's holocron was known to be from the race that inhabited Myrkr.

Myrkr was home to the ysalamiri, creatures which created bubbles which pushed back the Force. This ability evolved to protect them from pack animals called vornskrs, the only known animals to hunt exclusively by sensing the Force. The ysalamiri lived on olbio trees.

In 9 ABY, Myrkr was located between Imperial and New Republic territory. During that time, Talon Karrde's organization had a base on Myrkr. In the early phases of Grand Admiral Thrawn's campaign, Imperial forces moved on the world in order to secure supplies of ysalamiri.

The Yuuzhan Vong conquered the planet and used the native vornskrs to create the voxyn, which were cloned in the worldship Baanu Rass in the Myrkr system. A Jedi strike team infiltrated this worldship to kill the voxyn queen. During this mission, Anakin Solo was killed. After the mission, Baanu Rass was destroyed, and the Domain Lah worldship went into orbit over Myrkr.

During the Second Galactic Civil War, Jacen Solo brought Tahiri Veila to the system in order to use his abilities in flow-walking to revisit the Myrkr mission. Although Jacen claimed his intentions were noble, he was in fact manipulating Tahiri so that she would become more and more loyal to him and him alone. The two watched the final moments of the mission and Tahiri was able to give Anakin one last kiss before he succumbed to his wounds. So addicted to flow-walking was Tahiri that the two revisited the scene a further five times, tiring Jacen but completely bending her to his will.

Ryyk was a Neti colony. It was wrongly considered by some to be the original Neti homeworld, which was Myrkr. At some unknown time prior to the Sith War, Ryyk was destroyed when its star went supernova. It may have formed the Ryyk Nebula.

BIOLOGY AND APPEARANCE:
They had tough gray skin similar to plant bark, multiple thin branching arms, and thick body trunks. Neti foliage tended to be brownish or black and grew on the upper parts of a Neti's body. As plants, Neti survived through photosynthesis, though they also needed some water to survive. Neti were extremely long-lived, with an average life span of several thousand years. Neti reproduction only occurred once every few centuries. Seeds often remained dormant for more than a thousand years before germinating.

Neti were capable of changing their size and shape, apparently at will. A skilled Neti could morph its shape into a roughly humanoid solid treelike mass anywhere from 2 to 9.5 meters tall. When resting, Neti generally appeared as 5-meter tall treelike objects, but they were capable of maintaining other shapes and sizes, even when asleep or knocked unconscious. As a result of the Neti's infrequent procreation and long lives, their population always remained small and quite close to their homeworld.

As plants, Neti had no need for food. They had a greatly reduced need for water as long as they had regular access to broad-spectrum light. Neti only had need of one-tenth the water of most other species, but if deprived of sunlight, they would starve, much as other races would when lacking food. Neti schooled in a special Force trance, presumably Hibernation Trance, could survive almost indefinitely in an area with natural sunlight and rain. All Neti were Force-sensitive and learned both the Neti language and Basic from youth.

CULTURE AND HISTORY:
Roughly four thousand years before the Battle of Yavin, the Neti left their home planet of Myrkr for reasons unknown. Afterward, Neti never were a common sight across the galaxy. When Ryyk was destroyed, only one Neti (Jedi Master Ood Bnar) was known to have been offworld. However, given the species' long life span and germination period, some Neti might have survived the destruction of their world, awaiting discovery in remote locations. By the Legacy era, the species were considered a myth.
