Mattel "Jurassic World" Maisie & Tyrannosaurus Rex Review:

Today I will be taking a look at the most diminutive (and hardest to find at the moment) "Jurassic World" basic figure: Maisie.

The package contains Maisie, a static mini T-Rex and a multipart articulated T-Rex skull museum display diorama element.

The multipart articulated T-Rex skull is, in my opinion, the real reason to buy this set. The 5 pieces (l/r skull halves, mandible, display post and display base) are very well sculpted, the base even has miniscule wood patterns embossed into the plastic. The skull halves peg together through the hole in the top of the display post and the mandible pegs into holes on the interior of the skull and opens and closes. The display post pegs into the base and rotates allowing for different display options. The articulated jaw opens and closes also offering different display options.

The mini T-Rex is a one piece unpainted static figurine. I believe it is meant to represent one of the toy dinosaurs Masie has and not an actual living creature. Nothing special but it is quite well sculpted for such a tiny figurine. Some detail paint for the eyes and teeth will really bring out the sculpted details.

Maisie is the smallest human figure in the line. I have included a scale comparison image in this review with an Owen figure. Despite her small stature, she still has some great articulation: ball joint head (shallow up/down movement as the ball is set deep in the head), ball hinge shoulders/hips/knees. She lacks the ball hinge elbows of the rest of the human figures most likely due to her slender arms, although Hasbro did ball hinge elbows on skinnier arms in the past. The lack of elbow joints is not a huge deal breaker especially since articulated child action figures are few and far between. The figure's likeness is pretty good considering how tiny the head is and the eyes/lips/hair paint apps are neat and clean.

This figure goes for big bucks on the secondary market (anywhere from $40-$200, almost certainly since this wave has not reached saturation levels yet) but don't feed the scalpers. I found 3 of them at a Target this morning. With the ramp up to the holiday season fast approaching and restocks imminent, I bet that she will be common and easier to get soon enough.

I will be on the lookout for this set. The Ellie figure was hard to find for a while and is now plentiful.

Dan,

Have you came across the Wheatley figure yet? Found him at Target over the weekend and I think I like him more than the basic Owen figure.

The head is perfect on one of the Indiana Jones German figures. I'm going to use the body and make a 1960s African mercenary.

I have sean Wheatley a few times and passed on him each time as I just have very little use for him myself. There is nothing wrong with the figure, I just don't have a need for him.
