Papo "Kraken" Review:
This fantastic static figurine is a unique take on the mythical seas monster, the Kraken. It is believed that the legends of the Kraken were inspired by ancient sailors' sightings and encounters with giant squids. This figurine is inspired by a different cephalopod, the nautilus (a squid with a hard shell), but has an octopuslike body protruding from the fancifully designed shell.
Like all Papo figurines, it is made from a heavy, somewhat pliable vinyl and is painted extremely well. Lots of great sculpted textures cover the entire figurine, from pebbly looking skin to a rough, spike covered shell exterior. An interesting sculpted addition is a rusty chain looping around the shell, although it is a solid loop when it would have been cool to have it ending in an anchor embedded in the shell's hard surface.
It scales nicely against a 4" figure, but I honestly wish it were about 30%-40% bigger so as to look more menacing. Granted, against a 1/18 scale figure it does not represent the massive sea monster that can pull entire sailing vessels beneath the waves, but it still looks formidable enough to kill a man- or horse- sized victim.
