The Gorothite
« on: December 23, 2009, 03:01:34 PM »
INFO: The Gorothites were humanoid sentients indigenous to Goroth Prime. In their own language they were called "B'Dellyi (sing. B'Del)," which meant "the People."

RACE: Gorothite
HEIGHT: 1.5 to 1.8 Meters Tall
SKIN: Light brown to dark green
DISTINCTION: Parental instinct, strong family bonds, exceptional sense of smell, Hyperbaride Immunity (Gorothites are less affected than humans by the contaminants in the air, water, and food of their world), long arms
LANGUAGE: Goroth, Galactic Basic

HOMEWORLD:
Goroth Prime was the Gorothite homeworld, located on the border with the Outer Rim Territories. Goroth Prime had varied terrain, and was unusual in that hyperbarides were naturally found in its crust.

The natives had reached a feudal state around 100,000 BBY. The planet was discovered by Ithorians and Corellians 8,000 BBY. The Gorothites developed hyperdrive 7,600 BBY and joined the Republic 7,500 BBY.

The planet had many Corellian and Aqualish miners, between whom a civil war erupted 4,000 BBY. It was at this time that local governor Matri Bey created D'Jar'Min. In 3,996 BBY, the war resulted in the devastation of the planet by asteroid weapon bombardment.

During the 100 years prior to the Battle of Yavin, the capital Graith suffered three devastating groundquakes, and an groundquake also hit J'Lan.

In 17 BBY, the planet was enslaved by the Galactic Empire under Governor Marsh Limoth and Moff Nebin Cray, the new governor of the planet. In opposition, the Night Wind resistance arose. Shortly after the Battle of Yavin, the Rebel Alliance saved Night Wind from destruction by Limoth in Operation: Starbird.

BIOLOGY AND APPEARANCE:
Goroth Prime was once a lush, forested world, but is now a wasteland, thanks to a lethal orbital bombardment that occurred during an Aqualish-Corellian war (this cataclysmic event is referred to as the Scouring). The native Gorothites survived only because they are hardy people.

Gorothites speak by creating a resonance in their sinuses; they have no "voice-box" as such. When they speak their own language, their voices are dry and clicking, and their nostrils visibly close and open to create stops and plosives ("p," "b," "k" and similar sounds). When they speak Basic, their voices are thin and reedy.

CULTURE AND HISTORY:
With the Scouring, Gorothite civilization fell apart and many j'bers (clans) were decimated. The survivors banded together out of necessity: tiny fragments of what were once huge families, and individuals who were the sole heirs of proud bloodlines. Today, the j'ber are slowly regaining strength, but it will be many centuries before the population grows to safe levels.

Most goods and services are provided by nationalized companies, their prices and tariffs set by the Colonial Government. There are still some independent sources for goods and services, but they are few and so small as to be irrelevant in the grand scheme. If they ever were to grow large enough to be noticed, they would be nationalized, too.

Predictably, there is a strong "underground economy." This is based largely on the old concepts of barter and influence, rather than on money. It is very difficult for off-worlders to buy anything through the underground economy, because Gorothites have learned to be very cautious about admitting any involvement to non-natives.

In 17 BBY the Gorothites were enslaved by the Galactic Empire under the control of Governor Marsh Limoth and Moff Nebin Cray. The Night Wind resistance movement arose in response. The Gorothite were eventually freed by the Alliance to Restore the Republic shortly after the Battle of Yavin.
