Veterans Day 2010
« on: November 10, 2010, 06:04:25 PM »

We here at the Shipyards wanted to say thank you to our Veterans and their families of all free countries and hope, wherever they are, they know they are appreciated.  We here at the Shipyards will never forget their sacrifices they have made on our behalf. So, thank you and God Bless!

I like that!

A repost from a Cadet VanVliet from a North Carolina publication

"Many do not even acknowledge the day that it is. It is not just a date on a calendar. It is a day to reflect and to thank those in uniform who are fighting for the United States. It is a day to thank the men and women who not only fought, but also died as a sacrifice for your freedom. It is a day to show these veterans our appreciation. 365 days each year, they are protecting our freedom, our liberty. What do they get in return? One day of thanks.

This day we set aside for them is so insignificant compared to what they give for us.

I ask you now to think about and take the time to thank all veterans for their dedication to this country. Thank them for having the courage to leave their families and risk their lives. Thank them for everything they do. Any simple act of thanks can make a world of difference to veterans who may feel forgotten. On this Veterans Day, thousands will send a card, wear the nation’s colors proud, and thank all those in uniform. What will you do? The day after Veteran’s Day, they will still be veterans; they will still be dedicating their time to serving this nation for your freedom.

Recognize and say thanks."

Cadet 3rd Class Michelle VanVliet
Air Force ROTC

In repsonce, Your welcome, and Thank You to all former, fellow and future Veterans

yeah we had rememberance day here   ,the whole country just stops    at  11 a.m(people stand in the street and shops with their heads bowed ,stores turn their lights off and cease trading for 2 minutes) .    to observe the 2 minutes silence, wreaths are laid at town war memorials(and almost every town has one)  ,all british forces in the world(except those in combat operations ) wherever they are observe the silence ,many people wear the Poppy as a symbol of Remembrance  ,there will also be a service of rememberance at the Cenotaph in London on sunday(Known as rememberance sunday) and there will be another silence held . but the first silence is always held on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month  (the official end of the 1st World War ,"The Great War").

Ode to Rememberance,

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
    We will remember them. "

my great grandfather  was killed on day one of the battle of the Some  with 60,000 of his comrades in arms ,mown down like grass by German machine gunners .
my grandfather faced the Japs in Burma with the famous "Chindits" ,my step grandfather was a Royal Marine Commando and survived the disasterous raid at Dieppe . and my Dads father (who was in a reserved occupation in WW2 ,he was a Master Builder) served his King and Country in the Home Guard ,during the dark days when we were threatened with the German Invasion (we now have his release papers, documents  and letter of thanks signed by King George himself).and we have just found out that my Great Great Grandmother was a nurse during the 1st world war and at one point was stationed in france(we now have her papers including her certificate of acceptance into the Royal College of Nursing  ..dated 1882.

Jay, one of my fondest memories was of a Canadian gal (she was 80 something at the time) describing the London Blitz and what your country had to endure until we entered that war. Your country stood alone against tyranny and thankfully we Americans got our head out of our arse during WWII.

This holiday is about all FREE Countries and their veterans.  I can remember Desertstorm and the varied countries that were a part of that massive convoy when we finally helped liberate Kuwait. Anyhow, just another reason I like the Yards, we have members from so many different countries whose veterans are a reason we can do the things we do today.

Thanks to all of our home and foreign veterans, of all free countries, I hope somone said thank you in person today.

That was an awesome bit of history that you gave us, Jay.
As bad and bloody as it gets, I do love hearing old war history.
