Mattel "Jurassic World" Mega Colossal Tyrannosaurus Rex (Wal-Mart Exclusive Version) Review:
Let me just preface this review by saying this thing is HUGE!
Mattel has really knocked it out of the park with their "Jurassic World" line, easily surpassing Hasbro's sad attempt 2 years ago.
The Mega Colossal Tyrannosaurus Rex has a fantastic sculpt from nose to tail. There are lifelike wrinkles, folds and bumps all over this enormous dinosaur. From tip to tip, this beast is over 3' long and stands almost 18" tall at the top of the head. There are 6 points of articulation- hinged jaw, swivel hips, ball jointed tail and swivel shoulders. The T-Rex has an electronic roar sampled from the movies when you open its jaw past a certain point. The T-Rex can also "eat" 3.75" action figures or small dinosaurs (figures or dinosaurs can be retrieved via an opening hatch disguised as part of the dinosaur's belly).
The version that I picked up is the Walmart exclusive "Battle Damaged" one. This basically translates to the dinosaur having an extra set of paint applications on top of the standard deco. The added paint applications are a series of red "slashes" painted onto the dinosaur's hide. There are some slash scars in the sculpt already, but for the most part they are ignored in relation to the added paint apps resulting in the majority of the slashes looking like red stripes on the brown/tan skin and really do not add much to the overall presentation. The nice thing about these additional paint apps is that the battle damaged version can be displayed alongside the general release version and they will look like 2 different individuals of the same species so you can justify getting both versions to your wife.
This dinosaur is quite light despite its huge size due to being mostly hollow plastic and vinyl. The majority of the toy is plastic with the tail and upper half of the head being vinyl. The T-Rex has excellent balance and stands quite easily and steadily (just like the real thing, the tail is used for balance).
The most amazing thing about this toy is the price. Walmart had this monster priced at $49.00, a steal for something so large. If Hasbro had released something this scale, you know it would have been $125.00 easily. If you see this (either or both versions), grab it! You will not be disappointed.
