In December 2018 I met an artist here in Germany. His name is Daniel, he is a specialist for wire production and technology and literally a creative mastermind! When he doesn't work hard, he makes STAR WARS costumes, props and replicas in 1:1 scale.

Please, make sure to check out his page on facebook, leave a like and comment. Your feedback is always appreciated!:

Daniel has joined us on here, now! And here's a link to his other projects of costumes, props & replicas:

http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=10583.msg210830#new

Now, I would like to share two of his projects with you here:

Diorama: Head of a B1 Battle Droid Unit on the beach of Kachiro, Kashyyyk

Traces of War...

I do not own this image.
Source: Wookieepedia

Scale: 1:1
Materials:
- diorama:
-- plastic frame
-- ~ 2 kg sand
-- ~ 3 kg epoxy resin
-- clearcoat spray paint

- prop replica:
-- 3D printed Battle Droid head
-- primer paint
-- special corrosion paint
-- wire

Measurements:
- diorama: 45 x 36 x 2 cm // 17.7 x 14.17 x 0.8 inches (L x W x H)
- prop: 28,5 x 3-15 x 6 cm // 11.2 x 1.1-5.9 x 3.36 inches (L x W x H)

Weight:
to be added

Definitely not a fossil you would discover in Utah...well, maybe - who knows?!

Details:

How it's Made & Points of Interest:

Daniel told me that this project in particular was quite a technical challenge and therefore a lot of fun. And here is why:

First, he didn't want to mix the epoxy resin into the 2 kg of sand with an electric whisk because it would've ruined the machine. Instead he mixed both materials by hand. Make sure to wear Nitrile safety gloves for such tasks.

Second, it was especially not easy to fix the iron powder on the 3D printed head without using glue or clear varnish because Daniel wanted to let it corrode before. He told me that was the biggest challenge and I will add more details on that tomorrow.

On the one hand he needed space for new upcoming projects, but on the other it wasn't easy for him to sell it after all the effort he put into it - and after it turned out that well! And I'm glad he actually decided to sell this two projects so that I can show them to you, too.

Comment:

As you know I'm not only a big fan of the Old Republic era, but also a fan of dioramas. So every now and then I look for Star Wars dioramas on eBay. And when I found this one I was immediately excited! I wrote Daniel to give him my kudos. I initially didn't plan to buy it because I couldn't pay him the price he asked for. But he showed me further images of his second Battle Droid project and made me an offer for both. The price of 160€ covered the cost for the materials he used and was affordable for me.
About a month later I picked up the two props on my way home for Christmas. And I was honestly more thrilled to meet Daniel than I was to take the two masterpieces with me.
I had a very good coffee, met his family and shared some experience on model building and our current projects - it was such a great time & I'm very thankful for his hospitality! Thank you Daniel!
My first impression on this diorama was that it depicted Geonosis, but I learned that Daniel actually recreated a prop from the Battle of Kachiro in Revenge of the Sith, which is even more exciting because I'm working on some more Kashyyyk projects myself at the moment.
I especially like the different shades of the rust - it just looks so darn realistic!

During the Clone Wars the CIS developed their B1 units and they also became smaller by the end of the war. B1 units of the time of the Invasion on Naboo were bigger and less maneuvrable than the ones produced and deployed on Geonosis. So for an older B1 unit this prop might be a little too small, but for an updated one of AOTC and ROTS it should be pretty accurate.

With an archaeologist added to the STAR WARS Universe with the character of Doctor Aphra I had the spontanious idea to add a couple brushes, a magnifying glass and a tape measure to the scene. That might be something she would dig out.
I'm going to build a diorama for Doctor Aphra in 1/18 scale this year and I admit Daniels diorama looks better without these accessories I added.
In fact I think it looks like he had been on Kashyyyk himself and took this find with him.
You should know that he is an elite Stormtrooper of the Imperial Army!

I'm beyond happy with this unique piece of art and I think ILM would be lucky to have Daniel in their team!

Please, don't forget to check out and like his facebook page - also to see more images:

If you look close enough you'll also find his second B1 project, which I'll feature here tomorrow...

Also leave a comment and let us know what you think! Your feedback is always appreciated!

Thank You!

- Philipp

wow
It is amazing what people can create with a 3D-printer. The Driod head is a masterpiece.
I can only agree with Shawn. It would be great to see him here on the Shipyards.
Thank you for sharing his outstanding work.

Welcome aboard Daniel! I’m so happy you joined the yards! I’ll add a description to your Battle Droid bust, too. Please, let me know if I missed out any details on both projects. I think we’re all excited to hear how you made them from yourself!

Thank the maker!

Welcome Daniel and awesome job on the Droid bust mate, the paint apps are top notch but what put this over the top for me is the wiring and the neck section. This is what makes a custom being great awesome and you have done the awesome factor here mate well done indeed.

Hey Ron
Thank you! The problem with the cables cost me almost 4 days. I attached each one individually and loosened it again, tried thicker and also flat. Also I had tried to jacketed. But the variant you see above was the best in my opinion.

Greetings from the forge

Welcome aboard Daniel. Your droid replicas are phenomenal. It is great to have an artist like you here on ISY.
I can't wait to see more of your projects.

Philipp: the Droid head is a great addition to your outstanding droid collection.
