Mr. Black's Customs: Boba / Akira mashup Slave I project WIP
« on: September 09, 2019, 02:00:04 AM »
Hey guys,

Long time no see! Thought I'd share a bit of what I've got going on at the moment.

Along time ago artist Billy Allison made an awesome piece of art combining Star Wars and Akira. I'm sure you've seen this Boaba Fett / Akira mashup before, otherwise you can just Google it.

A while ago I finally managed to track down a Slave I for a fair price. At first I was hell bent on the VOTC Slave I, but settled for the smaller AOTC Jango Fett version, because otherwise it would all be way too big to display :)

The latest pictures show the ship as it is right now: custom made decals applied, paintwork finished and a nice dark wash applied. The next step will be a pin wash with oil paint. Very anxious to see if I can pull that off!

Eventually the ship and a customized Boba Fett, plus customized sign will be placed on a big picture frame base.

I'll update this thread as I continue this project, but more actively on my Instagram account @mrblackscustoms, so be sure to follow me there :)

Here are a couple of WIP shots of how the ship is coming along. Still lots of work to do.

It is great to see you working on new project. It already looks great. Your paint work is just phenomenal. I like the decal work too. off to share on the front pages. And I think this is the Boba Fett Akira image you were referring too:

Looks like you have the paint spot on.

Thanks Tamer, Sjefke :)

Yup, that's the image I was referring to. The ship and Boba will be placed on a custom made base and the logo will be custom made in a 3d sign. I used Reaper's online paint identifier to match the colours as closely as possible.

The decals are a mix of the ones seen on Kaneda's bike and in universe Star Wars logos.

Thats the first thing I thought when I saw your colors, it matches perfectly.

I love how you got the worn paint look too. Can you describe how you did that?

That can be seen in the fist three pictures:

1.   Applied a grey basecoat and randomly added liquid rubber

2.   Applied a red coat of paint

3.   Removed the liquid rubber

All paint work so far has been done with an airbrush.

As far as applying decals goes: I first coated the entire ship in a gloss varnish, applied the decals, then applied another gloss coat for protection. In the last pics you can see the results of the dark wash to bring out the panel lines and dirty up the ship a bit. The upcoming oil wash will really make it have that familiar worn and used look we all know.

That's Vallejo's Liquid Mask. Works like a charm, smells like hell, though :D
