Rebuilding the Death Star
« on: June 23, 2024, 04:57:33 AM »
Here's the global project for my Death Star diorama (both ANH & ROTJ)
I don't know yet if I try full home made or continue with Frank Dioro's decals I bought on Etsy .
Hangar Bay with BMF is the main part with the iconic Obi-Wan/Darth Vader duel from ANH.
The ground level will be the Emperor's arrival from ROTJ.
Detention blocks under the Duel, the Red Control Room above the duel.
On the shelves, conference room and a try of Emperor Throne Room (ROTJ).

Even more ambitious than Jabba's Palace, I'm thinking. Two big dioramas at the same time...Wow.

Some updates.
Not very movie accurate, but I don't care. I use Frank's decals (with a cheap foamcore, not the best, and single paper instead of sticker).
Blastdoor is WIP, door can be close/open

This is a dream project here! Can you tell us what the approximate dimensions of this setup will be?
The walls look great! Are those prints from NiubNiub aka Frank Diorios Workshop?
I can't wait to see those hallways filled up with Stormtroopers and maybe the new princess Leia!
Thanks for keeping us updated even daily! This is fun!

The decals look good to me. While I appreciate "screen accurate", I've never been too uptight about it. The toys are a space for imagination after all. Sometimes I wind up liking things that aren't "screen accurate" better (I have always loved my blue Snaggletooth - he got a lot of play time when I was a little boy)

I first used some olds decals  from NNU on a backup CD, but too many where missing, so I bought the new version on Frank's Etsy shop.
Colors are differents, but printing is easier.
The DS ANH main level available space is 180*72 cm. Maybe 240*72 max.
For the DS ROTJ Emperor's arrival level (under the ANH level), 240*60,height 85 cm for the shuttle/tie hanging system.

A lot of Frank's Diorama Workshop printed on sticker sheets instead standard paper.
Glue stick steel needed, not for glue, but the reverse. It allow to move stickers on the foamcore.  DH

I try to cover the decal with a layer of self-adhesive transparency because I saw that flies had pooped on a section of wall.  ()rr ()rr ()rr

Washing paper is not a good idea.

it shines a little too much and I hope the plastic won't yellow with UV rays.

Let me know what is your feeling about this or if you have already tried something like this.

The central part is covered with the transparent layer

Fine, some days without working. After several days on Jabba, I need to do something else (as planned when I started the 2 project together).

I've refined a little bit the way I hope to arrange the different parts of the DS. I had forgotten the unmissable scene of the trash compactor.
So I'm going to shift the Vader/obi-Wan duel part to the center of the main platform. This will leave less room for the Falcon, but you don't get anything for nothing.

I'll have to modify the Duel part a bit. The 19 cm high parts given by Frank in his blueprints and decals will be replaced by 15 cm parts, the "standard" size of the DS panels. Of course, I would also have to adjust the height of the walls of the trash compactor in order to be able to place the POTF based detention blocks above and keep the same level for the adjoining floors.

I hope to keep Detention blocks and Red control Room at the same level. The briefing room will be between the duel level and the Red control room.

If all goes according to plan, Emperor Throne room will overlook all of this

Here's the shot of the idea.
Using POTF Detention block with his sewer door above the compactor makes this more fun  >:D.

I spent a lot of time on trying different ways to make this DS Dio.

According to Starchaser, using Frank's decals bring a certain movie accuracy harder to obtain with the way I made more than  a decade ago.

I did an Archway (15 cm high) instead of the Frank's 19 cm high wall.
Full foamcore with decals, some trouble with cutting, of course.
I apply patches on the angles, my foamcore is really bad, the foam is no good, making holes and craps even with new blades.

According to myself (it's very important for me  >:D), some work on the DS.
First, I change dimension of the Obi/Vader area. The entire size is now 60cm * 42cm, with  an extra area behind of 27 cm (needed for Blastdoor doors and a rear small hallway behind the curve hallway)
A change in main Obi/Vader room is the loss of 6 cm, a standard DS panel.
I change position of the rear small door at the end of the curve, and replace it with a "real" door, who gives access to the rear hallway.
I remove the left part of the curve hallway for giving the view inside this.
I will play with some half panels and others non-movie accurate things for finish this part.
I also add a test small round wall panel.
The last shot is form where the falcon must be in the shelves.

Here I am with some new updates.
First, I refined my measurements in order to get pretty much what I wanted (in fact I want to move and have a real dedicated room, not a closet;) but it's much more expensive :) )
I played with archway between Duel and curved hallway. I complete this wall with a small round wall as a bonus.

Panels behind and next to the trash compactor are less or more defined. I make a junction between rear curved hallway and rear trash compactor.
Compactor walls are planned to be 2 levels high. I want to keep the compactor door opened.

Thx :)
Details are from Dioramas Workshop ;)
I only play with decals I bought and printed.
The main job is sharpening blades, foamcore eats blades, 3 or 4 cuts, and sharpening again and again. Even with the low quality material I have.
