Vintage Rebel Transport
« on: August 26, 2024, 09:50:36 AM »
I had bought pieces of Transport and so I managed to gather enough elements to get a complete one, but all yellowed, and not one in the same tone as the other. So I decided to repaint it...

I spent more than 2 hours airbrushing this carcass. It's hell.
At first, everything goes well, then after a few passages, nothing but air. Forced to disassemble everything, clean everything, and start again. I was planning to airbrush part of Jabba's palace, I'm moving on to plan b.
Unless someone gives me advice, the airbrush will go to the landfill very quickly...

I think repainting the parts was a wise decision. Have you primed them before painting the parts in the final color?

Okay, today I talked to two friends of mine who have been building and painting model kits in all scales for 60 years. And here's what they said:

- clean the plastic parts with cleaning gasoline or isopropyl alcohol first
- make sure everything is free of dust and debris in a clean and dust-free workspace (I know you know that, but just a general guideline)
- there are towels to wipe the kit in order to remove electrostatic tension on the plastic parts but this is optional
- generally use paints of the same company e.g. Revell or Game Color
- always use a primer, also from the same company
- let the primer dry completely according to provided recommendations. If not, it can also cause air bubbles in the paint when applied to soon
- adjust the pressure of the compressor if possible. Cheap compressors are often not adjustable and don't have constant pressure levels, which is the main reason for air bubbles within the paint!
- spray-paint is known for decreasing pressure and paint quality over time, the emptier the can gets

Let everything dry completely before applying the net coat of paint.

You can also sand the first coat of paint with air bubbles with a very fine grid of 1200 or so before you apply a second layer.

I hope I could give some useful hints. Good luck with your project!

- Philipp

Thank you Philipp, I really appreciate that you take the time to look into my troubles and provide me with answers  8)

As I am stubborn, I persist. The possibilities offered with experience correspond to my needs, it will be a shame to give up

New compressor ordered this night, delivery scheduled tomorrow.

You're very welcome! The compressor is like the lung or heart of an airbrush system, when the pistol is the hand. I don't have an airbrush system, yet. Therefore I asked my buddies.
I hope the new compressor will fix the problem also for future projects.  :)

That's a lot of great info. I don't use an airbrush (yet...), so this is very informative.

New compressor with airbrush kit received.
Verdict: 2nd coat in 20 minutes, including unpacking time. Compared to more than 2 hours on the old model.

The double action works well, I will be able to continue training to get the results I hope for future projects.

Thank you again Phillip for your help. (It's the atmosphere of mutual aid on ISY that makes me continue to appreciate this forum, despite the regrettable drop in attendance/participation that I have noticed)

Sounds good! Another friend of mine who is my God for Warhammer recommended me some good compressors years ago. They're all available on eBay or Amazon. Back in the days I watched so many videos about airbrush systems, I forgot most of it, again. But some day, I'll finally get one and practice.
And I'm glad you found a better compressor to further optimize your system.
It's an ongoing learning progress, don't get discouraged.
You're on a good way and constant pressure will give you the freedom to not worry about air-bubbles anymore. Hope the paint is nice and liquid smooth.

Man, that was one fast delivery. Next day delivery I guess?
