« on: September 30, 2009, 05:11:06 AM »
Hello guys Once again I will have all my dios in this one thread and I will start with my older stuff and work my way up to the new. Without further  delay here is my Rancor pit.

A generic Clone Wars holding cell...

that is all for now, I'll be back soon with more.

Love that Rancor pit!  Is that spray foam insulation you used?

That rancor pit is just killer! What did you use to make the gate?

Boy if that isn't killer. How in the heck did you do all of that? It looks so realistic.

Thanks everyone and Psyclone figured it out it is spray foam. It is fairly easy but i had used/experimented with it a few times before I made this. I was using it for something at work and instantly the light bulb popped up. So go get a can and experiment a little, watch how it expands, put different amounts on a few pieces of cardboard and watch it grow. It will grow until it is dry so start off sparingly until you have the idea. It dries Tan and I spray painted everything brown then gave it a series of tan washes to get the right look. The gate is simply foam core that was painted. I even have the gate key pad in the back room that Luke hits with the skull. If you guys are interested I have about 30 or so photos of every element of this scene...just like the movie.

Consider me entranced................. Just like you said, you recreated every scene from that part of the movie here. This is truly a piece of work, man! I like the shot looking through the floor with all of Jabba's minions looking down at the action.

THAT IS AWESOME>...

however... the final scene with the keeper needs the HB treatment..  Hangarbay, oh master of all things photoshop, make the fat man cry!   ;D

I have a question... you say you spray painted the foam sealant?  I have tried this and it always melts..  I know me (and probably Doc for sure) want to know how you managed to keep the foam from melting....

Spud and Doc, thanks for setting me straight and jogging my memory. When I was testing this stuff it did melt when spray painted. I did paint this with a brush...sorry it has been YEARS since I made the pit. Sadly it is stored in my shop as I am running out of room. My son and his huge drum set took over my SW room. haha

No worries - we're just on this "Eternal Quest" it seems.  "How can you use spray-paint on styro without melting it?"  So far, the answer seems to be "Move to Australia."
