What gauge is the pipping? Is it a hobby store find or would lowes and homedepot have it? Is there a special tool to bend it?

That is 16ga rebar tie wire. Lowes or Home Depot may have it by the roll but I'm not sure.
I just bent it with multiple pairs of pliers and my fingers.
