Excellent, Doc.

Purly by accident, I discovered that quickset and hs3 bond well together, even   if one is alot older than the other.

Herein lies the tale of my first adventures with the creation of a two-part mold.  I have not yet perfected it, but the first two efforts have yielded extremely promising results.  I tried to take plenty of pictures for people to follow in my footsteps if they wish or to spot and warn me of problems I face - or of easier approaches I could take.

I began by gathering my materials - Alumilite's HSIII silicone, Sculpey, a mixing cup and stirring rods, wax-paper, a section of 2-inch PVC pipe, and the object I wished to mold.

Oh, and coffee.

I selected 2" as my pipe diameter based on a dome diameter of 1.25" and the desire to leave at least .25" of space between the master and the wall of the container, for a minimum acceptable diameter of 1.75".  In the end, 2" pipe was the size I had available.

To begin, I filled the bottom end of the pipe with sculpey and tapped the dome lightly in place.

Then I poured in the sculpey to cover the dome by roughly a half-inch.  I ended up pouring up 4 more molds at the same time of the more conventional 1-piece type we're used to.

When the HSIII had cured, I shoved the entire assembly out with the aid of an endcap I'd bought for another project.

Then I peeled away the sculpey to expose the underside of the dome.  I hadn't been careful in getting my sculpey's surface good and flat before putting the dome down, so this mold has some less-than-perfect detailing around the dome's rim.

Then I put the first side back into the PVC with the inside of the dome now facing up.  I liberally applied Cast'n Craft mold-release all over the exposed surfaces so the two layers of silicone would not stick together.  I then poured it full of HSIII, again allowing about a half-inch or so.

When it set, I peeled the mass out of the tube.  Given the coating of mold release, this went far more smoothly than it had the first time.  There's a note - spray the inside of the PVC pipe with mold release - things are easier if you do.

My headache has come back, bordering on a migraine, so I'll have to finish up the tutorial later when I can stand to focus/concentrate on stuff.

aww man, sorry to hear about the migraine.  I have had one for two days now myself, but am used to it after having them almost constantly for 6 years.. althought they havn't been as bad or as often as of late.

anyways, the mold looks good.  If it doesn't work you can always build a spud gun with a 2" pvc barrel and launch it into oblivion.....  ;)

It looks promising to me, Doc.

For your migrane, try a headach powder or an alcha seltzer. That always seemed to help me when I used to get em.

PART II

Marginal improvement this morning.  I'll make another run at this and see.  Trev, sorry I had you all worked up and eager, only to leave ya hanging!

So, I have this large lump of silicone.  Somewhere inside, there's an R2 dome.  Hopefully it will peel apart properly...

So, eager to see how it worked, I mixed up some resin and poured the stem hole full on one side, then poured some into the dome side and slapped the two together.  The mold peeled apart fairly easily after the resin set up.

There's the head, nestled in its silicone cocoon.  Kinda cute, actually...

Popped loose...

Here's some comparison shots of the cast, alongside the original and mounted on the R2 body.

It fits on just like it should and looks pretty good, other than the little area I mentioned early on, where I didn't do a good job setting the dome in the sculpey.

I made another mold since then, this one from Quick-set.

The first cast from it had an air-bubble in its "neck stem" so it doesn't connect properly.  Plus, the resin I used apparently didn't get mixed right, as it is still tacky, some 48 hrs later.  Sheesh.  I modified that mold to - hopefully - eliminate air-bubble capture.  We'll see how that works out.  I may have to make another Quick-Set mold from a modified master dome with some bits added to help with air release.  That'll be okay.

That's the plan, Sarge!   ;D

Now that I've modified that 2nd mold, I need to spend a little time today and pour up a cast in it to see how the mods I made work out in practice.  Once I get a good feel for how it is working, I'll put some clear resin in it for an R3 head.  That'll make several people - other than just myself, of course - extremely happy.   8)  Might even happen this evening, ya never know around here.

You poured the stem and the dome I'm their seperate halves and slapped the two together! Amazing. Now that was a successful trial, Doc.

the cast of that dome looks stellar, Doc, if there are any flaws in the reproduced piece the camera can't see them so it looks like a perfect copy to me.

And so it begins... Mold #2 has been filled with clear resin and begins its 3-day curing-time.   ::)
