Yes the LCD is 1080p but you have to adjust the settings on the PS3 to accept it to 1080p other wise it will play at default settings

I believe that the default is in the automatic resolution setting. If you go to set it at double the resolution, it makes the image smaller as it does during the dvd playback using the same setting.
Have they gotten around to upscaling the dvd playback to 1080 yet.

If it says 1080 that's what it should be putting out. Could be either the tv you are using or more possibly the cables.
If you are using componant cables you can only get up to 1080 I resolution and if you use an HDMI, you can get up to 1080p.   If you are only using 3-way AV cables, you might only be able to get 480 I.

I LOVE my Blu-Ray player!  I watched Shreck the Third the other night, and it was brilliant!  Details on things that I thought looked good before, but the difference is unparalleled.  Transformers was seamless and incredible!

The CG movies always seem to look the best on blue ray. I've seen Transformers several times but I might rent the blue-ray just to check it out. How are the special features on that one, Pat? Any cut scenes?

I don't have a giant TV, but I do have a 24 and 26 inch monitor for our computers.

Our HTPC(hooked up to a monitor until we get said big screen, lol) has blu ray and let me tell you, huge difference.

Biggest show for that, in my opinion, is cars.  Looks amazing on blu ray, upscaling looks ok, thats how we watch it normally, but we got the kid the blu ray for his birthday and wow!

The ps3 and the 360, I think, are also great to check out 1080p.  Most movies don't play in it, yet, I haven't seen any that go beyond 720, myself, but the game systems can give true 1080 and wow, very clean, bright, vivid details.

Your right there, Simon. I havent rented a blue ray in a while but I sure do enjoy that better and brighter picture quality.

I couldn't afford to rent locally, but with netflix(which I get the lowest plan, just so I can watch the instant movies) its only ten bucks a month and I average about 6 dvds, so its well worth it.

We own, umm, two blu rays so far, sky high(for the wife) and cars, lol(for the kid).

I only own x-3 "choke" but have rented 20 or so since I got my ps3. "that was years ago, by the way"
