Oh, I see. Do you have a macro setting? It is represented by a flower icon on most cameras. If so use that setting when photographing small details. Also provide plenty of light so the camera can capture your image. Better yet go outside and snap them in natural light when you can. Finaly, provide a background that is simple, like a folder. That way the camera will focus on your figure when set on automatic not the background or somewhere in between. Those few tips should help even with your older camera. Give it a shot when you get time.
