Serving Wherever NeededAs mentioned I am now very proud doing stuff for two German publishing houses (
XUN and
Hary-Production) which are focused on everything "phantastic" and SciFi. I will do cover artworks as well as hight contrast black&white illustrations (along with many other artist of course) for usage inside the books. Though b&w is not at all my favorite medium I suddenly had an idea for a composition and gave it a try.
Maybe its no clever idea here, for the planets in the background are the only "space art" accessoires and by replacing them with a cloudy sky this scene could take place anywhere on earth as well. But thats the trick, keeping the soldier or space marine without details like a synonym for all who are serving - wherever needed. So its a space art piece as well as a tribute to our troops.
The artwork techniques are simple, too. Just three basic colors - black, white, dark grey - laid out quickly to shape the figure and landscape. Then by using custom brushes for the grass and texture of the distant mountains as well as a part of a photo of a desert camo in high contrast I added the desired details. After this I added the planets (actually its always the same planet, originally rendered in Bryce), some textures, the starfield, atmospheric noise and blurrs (using photoshop filters). And thats it ;-)
I don't know yet if this will be accepted by one of the pubslihers or when its going to be published, but anyway I had a lot of fun doing it and can imagine some follow ups done this way, like a conceptual artwork.
I will not post this image anywhere else on my blogs for I do not want to spread the word too far till its officially published, so please keep it here within the yards. thank you.
