ARTISTS NEEDED!!
« on: September 13, 2011, 09:49:03 AM »
I *just* got this email in and am sharing it before I even sign up.  I'll be back in a few to add my comments, but I wanted to give my talented artist buddies a shot at being involved in this...

TWO BIG news items, short one first.

===========
         FIRST
===========

There is enough interest to make the deeply discounted How To
Think Sideways for Self-Publishers course worth creating,
so I'm putting it together now.

If you want to know when it becomes available, sign up
to receive progress reports and the "it's live" notice HERE:

===========
       SECOND
===========

After a bit of a rocky road getting things up and running,
How To Think Sideways Resource-Providers, where folks
with creative skills can offer them to writers who are
looking for those skills to help them publish their own
work, is LIVE.

If you'd like to create an online business offering your creative
skills and working with some really good people who are
serious about their writing, please keep reading.

SOME of the skills we're looking for are:

Reader:
Reads first draft and offers a written manuscript critique.

Content Editor:
Can work with author from author's completed revised first draft
through final draft, finds continuity errors, characterization
problems, plot holes, and things that just don't work. Also rough
grammar, spelling, and style.

Copyeditor:
Prepares edited manuscript for print, final shot for continuity
errors, typos, missing lines.

Proofreader:
Spelling, typos, missing text only.

Ebook Conversion:
Takes finished, edited and proofread manuscript and author's cover
art and converts them into .mobi, .epub and possibly other formats

Print Conversion:
Takes finished, edited, and proofread manuscript and author's cover
art, converts all problem characters and formatting issues, and
fits manuscript into a template uploadable to CreateSpace, Lulu, or
author's choice of other print-book provider.

Artist:
Creates art that author may purchase in royalty-free format for use
on book covers, brochures, flyers, websites, etc.

Cover Designer:
Uses stock royalty-free art and other elements to create a
royalty-free cover design for the author that fits the requirement
of (author's choice of) Kindle, iTunes, Barnes & Noble, Smashwords,
Lulu, CreateSpace, or other.

Manuscript Scanner:
Scans books in print and converts these into a PDF scan of the
original manuscript plus a Optical Character Recognition text file
in.doc or .rtf format that can be corrected and edited for
conversion to ebook/print format.

Scan Editor:
Removes all the scan errors created by Optical Character
Recognition and provides a clean .doc or .rtf manuscript

Copywriter:
Writes book blurbs, inside cover matter, website promotions, sales
pages,

Advertising:
Sells advertising space on a site or through a network of sites.

SEO/Social Media:
Helps author set up blog tours, use Twitter/RSS/Facebook, and set
up webside pages designed to bring in natural search-engine traffic
using titles, content, and key words

Marketing:
Creates campaigns for the writer that can include book trailers,
book banners, copywriting, deals with advertising spaces, sales
pages, web tours, and more.

Website Designer:
Sets up a working website for the author, and either teaches the
author how to use it, or provides content for the website.

Web Graphics Designer:
Creates original headers, logos, and other images to make a website
eyecatching and vinually appealing.

Multi-service:
Offers three or more services from the categories above.

THIS IS NOT A COMPLETE LIST.  If you do something you're sure
writers publishing their own work need that I haven't thought
of, join and offer your services and I'll create a new category. :D

If you have a skill or skills you would like to offer to
writers, there is a ONE WEEK special price for joining---
$3/month, $7/three months, or $10/six months.

The price you join at is the price you keep, unless you quit.

However, this will ONLY be open at this price until Monday, Sept 19th.

On Monday at around 12 noon Eastern Time, I'll closing the doors
to new providers until my folks have had a chance to work with the
ones who are already in there.

And if we start filling up even before then, I'll close the doors
early.

If you have skills we need, or know someone who does, please join us
or forward this e-mail.

P.S. Your customers will be my students from How To Think Sideways,
How To Revise Your Novel, How To Write A Series, and the upcoming
How To Think Sideways Self-Publisher's Edition.  I may also offer a
paid Providers-Board-Only membership to folks who aren't students in the
future, but that's not available right now.

You are effectively buying an ad on the school's website to advertise your services as a proofreader, editor, artist, website designer/hosting provider, marketing rep, etc.   Writers then contact the providers of services they need and the two negotiate a contract between themselves directly.  Holly's site does not handle any of the financial arrangements between author/client and service-provider.

Interested students/past students have all but demanded Holly provide a centralized "service-board" for them, and so she has.  I've followed Holly and her writing school for several years now and she provides quality instruction from a writer who has published 30+ (34, I think) novels across a range of genres.  I've bought several small courses from her myself and am planning to invest in one (or more) of the main courses as soon as our finances permit.  She has recently decided self-publishing is in the best interest of writers and this ad-board is a part of her commitment to that position.

I'm not making any money off anyone signing up - I just know several of our members here are d@mn fine artists who deserve a shot at widening their audiences and making some money while they are at it.
