Went to walmart and was amazed to find the most recent 6in figures in stock so I picked up 6 of the ones I really wanted... may go back for more for customs...
anyway, I recently did the removable helmet finn custom which (of course) hasbro also released their own version of. They also just released their own version of jango fett. I took both out of their boxes and took some comparison photos next to my customs.
I'll start with Jango (custom jango is on the right):
I'll be honest, as proud as I was of my custom when I made it, Hasbro knocked this one out of the park. I think the weathering on his armor might be a tad bit too heavy... but other than that their color choices and detailing is superb. I have to say, next to Fett, this may be one of my favorite black series 6" figures yet.
Ok, Finn and custom Finn (custom is on the left):
The biggest failure on my part was in getting the helmet hollowed out enough so that it fit further down over Finn's head. This results in a giraffe neck appearance on the custom... However, I have to say, the new sculpt of the body is just weird. I do not like the proportions... More about this in a minute:
Phasma comparison... Apparently there are 3 distinct trooper body sculpts
First of all, Phasma is F-ing HUGE. WTF?? I know she was supposed to be imposing and intimidating but she's not THAT big?! I am at a total loss for this scaling issue....
That is next to the Target 2 pack exclusive baton trooper (with Poe).
Here's Phasma next to Finn (in Poe jacket)
In my looking it seems like there are 3 distinctive sculpts... or at least 2, and FINN has been mix-matched. The original trooper sculpt that came out as a single pack, non-removable helmet, and the target 2 pack exclusive. This figure has a trim build, tall and skinny compared to the others... Then there is the large, stocky figure build of phasma... and lastly the somewhat mixed build of the removable helmet Finn.
As you can see, it seems like FINN uses Phasma's chest... but the torso fits deeper inside it and it thus looks lower on the body, making FINN shorter than both the original trooper and Phasma. It may just be the angle of this photo, but it also looks like FINN has a smaller torso and legs than the original trooper, also shrinking his height. In the above photos comparing my custom Finn and this one you can also tell that that thermal detonator on the back of the belt is also slightly different.
I'd be interested to know the reasons behind the different sculpt on Finn. It seems to me like they should have been able to just swap the head over and sculpt a new helmet and be done.
One possible explanation is that the helmet is slightly larger, and because of this it may have looked out of whack with the skinnier original trooper's body. Going with a stockier bodied Finn may have made it look more correctly proportioned...?
