concept fett project
« on: February 06, 2012, 12:35:39 AM »
I've been working on a new project this week... and I have it basically finished.  So in case your not following it on my facebook page I thought I'd show you the WIP pics and get your thoughts on where I should take it...

I had the idea to build a new mando 1:1 scale helmet the other day and when the concept boba helmet showed up in the TCW cartoon that same week I couldn't resist the urge to try and build it full scale... or at least something very close.

so I started with the concept:

and I took the template I used on my last mando helmet... but all I used was the dome template:

then tried covering that with paper mache... which didn't satisfy me:

Built the visor:

attached the two (which was later re-done), and covered the dome with "elmers wood filler":

I wasn't happy with the visor placement so I ripped it off (I used hot glue to hold it together so it was easy to take it apart when a different direction needed to be taken...

Started to build the main structure of the helmet and the faceplate with the visor attached:

added "respirators" which are actually trimmed up film canisters:

and then re-spackled everything with more wood filler to smooth the transition from the dome to the visor and ring around the top...(which can't be seen behind the helmet)...

Here's the question.  Do I go with the range-finder design as seen in the clone wars cartoon, which is similar to the traditional boba fett range finder...?

Or go with the original concept drawing's "backwards" rangefinder on the left side of the helmet?

I know my version isn't exact... and I am missing some details on the "nose"... should I rip off the nose and re-build it to look more like the original or does it look ok??

bear in mind I still need to sand down the dome to make it smooth... I'm waiting on the putty to fully dry.

I recognized that helmet right when it appeared on the show. I don't think the detail to the nose would be too hard to add. As far as the rangefinder, that would be
A greater challenge but would certainly take it over the top.
I'm loving this project, my friend.

Wow, I was hoping you would post here when I saw a few pics on FB last night.

My comments are on the front page, but I so appreciate you showing us your step by step instructions which should give folks an excellent base to be able to work on their own helmets. Very nice Devin. Very nice.

step by step would be dificult... as I pretty much have been making it up as I go!

you can find detailed instructions for the boba fett helmet templates here on dented helmet:

well I ran into an issue with the helmet.  I made it too short.  My chin is visible in the front.  I'm going to rebuild the lower half of the chin area on the helmet and try to lenthen it a little.. and re-build the nose to look more like the reference material...

Hey guys, here's an update:

Got a mocked up version of the rangefinder's "stem" finished.  The light will be housed in a standard rangefinder.  I thought it'd be a nice touch to add the LED light.

Sweet update Devin. Time to take this back to the front page.

That lighted rangefinder is gonna be sweet too.

update:

i need to do some major touch up work... the damn stand I had the helmet on outside while painting blew over and the helmet rolled around in the mud while I was at work...

Also, a few pieces of scotch tape were still on the front holding a piece together for gluing that I somehow missed, but showed up nicely (sarcasm) when painted... so I need to remove the tape and re-paint those areas.

I also plan on weathering it heavilly and giving it a nice "used and abused" look...
