Here's one I literally threw together in under 15 minutes.  I started out with one of two pieces of random packing foam I grabbed from my dad's trash pile a few weeks ago.  I thought they had potential.  One is sitting on Brendan's shelf as a backdrop for his droid "story-scapes" in its original white.  Well, I was outside putting some black basecoat on a few pieces and decided I'd try that darn Krylon Tangerine one more time - this time on the foam.  I shot at it in quick puff-bursts from 12"+ away, careful to not let it build up very much in any one spot.  I worked over the inside of the piece (I'll post a pic of that in backstage thread) pretty good.

Once inside, I set it on the counter where I do most of my photo-work now and loved how the full-spectrum bulb made it look!  Very romantic and homey!  I yelled for Keera to bring me her Organa's.  Looked good - but was lacking ... PLANTS!!  I screamed for legos!!  NOW!  All four of us sat in the kitchen floor, digging thru two boxes of lego parts looking for plant pieces and anything I could use to stand them up.I ended up with three potted plants, a small tree with vines, and a stray vine hanging down thru the skylight.

So, I want to express my gratitude to Brendan, Keera, and Alanna for their immediate responses to my calls for help and loaner materials.  They loaned props, assembled set-dressing, and helped hold up backdrops on a moment's notice to create the following set-piece.

Here's both pieces of foam being used to create a quickie street-scene.  I'm going for a more "open-air" look rather than the more typical "walled-in" look.  This is in response to some discussion on photonovels over on Yakface.  Again, there's a "behind the scenes" followup.

Both scenes are well photographed and would be ideal for a photo novel. Very simple, quick and effective.

Exactly!  Simple, quick, and effective are the key - esp. for those of us who aren't photoshop wizards.   8)  Jules, if you've followed Chewie's Chapter 29, you know what I'm going for - capturing a feeling of being outside with plenty of space around the viewer.  I'm thinking there's a way to align set walls to evoke that.  Thus, tonight's experiments.  I've got one more I'm fixing to post.  Y'all tell me if my approaches are working to capture that "outside" feeling.

Here's the other approach - an exterior corner with the walls moving away from the viewer.

Good sense of perspective in that last one.

Doc, the angles are perfect. If you need any help with photoshopping backdrops, or if you need any reference images for backgrounds let me know.

Those outdoors shot remind me of KOTOR, on that first planet.

Crap, I really need to go back and play that again, :)

Doc, shot number 1 is right on the money....

I've tried different lighting but in this case the strong blue light exagerates the Polistyrene.

I really like the depth of field.

Yep, I like that first shot also. A couple of small colored LEDs on the tank would have made it over the top.

For what it's worth, I agree shot 1 is the better of the two.  I think I know how to improve #2...one day I might set it up.

Oh, and I didn't have time to play with any tank lighting!  But yeah - that'd be an insane shot, with a couple of small spotlights searching out rebels, or driving lights picking out the street ahead...

Here's some shots of the painted styro with some Action Fleet and MicroMachine figs.  I'm playing at changing the size of the buildings by changing the size of the fig's used.  Eventually, I plan to add in some full-sized fig's as well as the other two sizes.
