Finishing up the Emperor's throne room today. Mostly done minus the 2 screens and railings. Will attempt to 3d Print the railings - we'll see how well that goes.

3D printing continues, though my big red room console print out for today totally failed, after 6 hours of printing. Will see what I can salvage from it. Currently trying to figure out why plastic won't come out of the extruder.

This looks so good that I might have to keep you in my address book for replacement pieces on my Death Star playset!
I have altered the action figure. Pray I don't alter it further.

Nice, the DS Update, not the idea of six hours of printing and having it bugger up. Hope your printer is ok.

A few photos from this weekend's C-3DO 3-d printing. The white glob is the failed red room computer wall. Hoping I can use it as a base and cover it with better-printed material. On the rust placemat is half of the gunner station gun. Sadly, it doesn't look like the right half wants to cooperate, so I may have to go back to the drawing board for the gun itself. Finally, 2 pieces of the detention block floor - one of them painted nice and red.

Currently I've just designed a wall piece for the gunner station area. I've duplicated the design from the vintage DS playset base walls (the greyish ones by the trash compactor. It's printing now.

Looking forward to being on the Imperial Shipyards podcast this week - if I can pry myself away from plastic printing long enough to Skype in...

Loving the Emporer's throne and it looks like you are having a ball designing and printing items.

Looks like more joy than pain on the printing. Glad you printer wasn't broken. Off to share.

Feel free to reach out if the printing is giving you trouble. I could probably shoot you some pointers. Im sure if your running into an issue ive seen it lol. Looking good man im here to help if you need it. Looks from your print that its too hot or under extruding. Your belts could also be loose, causing the corners not to stick to the details. They may not seem so but they will be sneaky lilke that lol.

One reason I like this place is seeing folks willing to help other folks if they have problems. Bravo Dark Knight 4516.

I am hoping in the near future to get a group of folks together for a round table on 3D Printing and hope I can convince you, Casey from GM, and Jrny Fan into just getting together to shoot the bull about the trials and tribulations of working in this medium.

You guys have already been such a boon to even helping folks get started and I really appreciate all of you taking the time to share.

Thank you for the offer! I may look you up once I start getting the hang of this. I've been very lucky so far with my prints. The red room console was just a bad print, I think. I'm re-printing it right now and it's turning out perfect.

Couple of questions for anyone in the know....

1) The 3-D printing creates a bit of a "lined" texture on top layers. I know some of the settings can change this to some different design - but is there a good way to combat this to make it more - smooth? I've read sanding is the way to go, but curious if there are other ways. I'm using PLA plastic.

2) Now that I'm painting these 3D prints (and some of the Instamorph too) - is there a good sealer I could spray on to help protect the paint from scratches? That's what I love about colored Instamorph - no paint to scratch, since the color is part of the plastic.

Try increasing your solid layers for the top and bottom. Also decrease your layer height. 1.5 - 2mm works well in my opinion but the smaller you go the less lines you will see. My opinion cura works better than slicer . Also slow down your outer perimeters or if you see an option for skin thickness change that. PLA will always show more lines than abs from what ive seen.

Krayon makes a good clear coat spray for plastics if you can find it. I had to get it from the local hardware store though because home crapo and lowes only seem to carry rustoleum which is terrible. just.....just terrible.....

Also you can do a vapor bath if you use abs which smooths the part but, you need a well ventilated area, good fire combatant skills lol just incase, a glass jar, a machine with a heated bed or a hotplate with a temperature gauge, and some acetone. That only works with abs though not pla

Thanks for the advice. Will certainly have to play with settings once I get some time off. Right now I'm just having too much printing out things left and right to worry about a picture-perfect finish :)

Here's the completed computer bank for the red room. Almost done with the cannon, too!

Wow, you have got to feel so good just knowing you can now just print what you want. Between instamorph and your printer you have got to feel pretty invincible.

It was a great podcast the other night thanks for giving us a bit of your time. Off to the front page yet again!
