I decided to keep with the avian naming convention and call this particular YT-1300 "The Kestrel". Given the name, I thought some wing-shaped markings would be appropriate. An image search provided a suitable set of wings which I printed onto frisket film and cut out to make a template. I am experimenting with the hairspray technique on this build; so I burnished down the tepmplate and airbrushed a layer of hairspray. While the spray was still slightly tacky, I sprinkled a few grains of coarse salt in a random pattern. After the hairspray dried, I airbushed a layer of Tamiya Royal Blue over the template.

After the paint was set but not fully cured, I attacked it with water, brushes, Q-tips, and an old toothbrush.

Upper Hull Markings:
The wings didn't turn out quite as distinct on the upper hull surface as they did on the bottom. The bottom is flatter and less detailed.

Still an excellent job ! I really like it.

Why go through life base fig, when you can customize?

More weathering (dot filter):

I applied dots of various colours of oil paints...

... and then blended them together with a soft brush dampened in mineral spirits.

To try something a little different, I wanted to see how it would look if the cargo handling mandibles were actually handling some cargo.
To that end, I fabricated a tank pod (Spice? Fuel? Tibanna Gas?) out of ping-pong balls and styrene:

Thanks for the positive feedback, everyone. I had a lot of fun with this build... now I just have to find some shelf space for the beast.
Cheers.

Very cool! Interesting idea with the cargo mandibles holding something there!
