Absolutely brilliant. The soft goods (especially the whiskers) are so well done. This really is the definitive Saelt-Marae.

Holy cow man, that look super awesome!
I love how you placed his whiskers under his nose. Looks super realistic.

Thank you Stan and CandyBlues.

I have done a few commissions in the past, but the last one took me almost two years to complete.  It was for four figures, but that's still a long time.  I hope to show those off soon.

Shoot me a PM.

Did anyone else feel jipped when Hasbro released the GotG Marvel Universe "FOUR" pack?  It was basically, SA Starlord and Drax with a one piece Rocket Raccoon and a totally unsatisfying potted Groot.  I never read a comic, but I really loved the GotG movie.  Yes, Hasbro released some great Marvel Legends figures, but I like my SA 3.75, so I'm stepping outside the Star Wars comfort zone and starting with Groot.  We'll see how far I get with the other movie Guardians.

Anyway, here are some Groot WIPs.

I used a spare Chewbacca as the base because he has the right scale and the brown joints.  It's easier to work with the right color joints than to prep and color them.  Joint rub is a b[ad thing].

Groot is pretty tall, even for Chewie so I extended the upper and lower arms with shims by 3/16 inch and the upper and lower legs by 1/4 inch.

I also like a lot of articulation in the head, so I casted a pair of Stormtrooper neck pegs and glued them together to look like a peanut.  I did the same for my Bastila Shan.  It really allows for great range of motion.  The head is a new sculpt and needs a lot of work still.

I almost took the easy way out and left the legs the the way they were, perfectly good swivel hips and ball jointed ankles ..... but I had to got and go with ball joint hips and rocker ankles.  I took some arms from a comic pack Juggernaut and cut up the elbows.  In stead of pointing the pegs up into the waist, standard for  MU figures, I sliced off the pegs and glued on nylon washers.  I set the washers next to each other and used plastic repair resin to make a pelvis.  That worked out, so I committed to trashing the Chewbacca pelvis and gluing on the legs to my custom one.  I gotta say, the hips move smoothly this way.  I did have to Dremell down the thighs to keep him from looking too hippy.

So here's my roughed out Groot.  Deleted Scene Chewie is next to him for scale.

He also has ball jointed wrists from a Megablock Halo action figure.  The hands are from a Thor Movie Frost Giant.

Very rough.
He'll need a lot of detailing and I think a bigger head.

Updates soon, .... as soon as I finish painting my basement, ..... before Christmas.  Maybe next year.   :

What a great idea. And yeah, Groot was disappointing. (While I like the comic look of MU Starlord, I would have liked a movie version of him in his duster as well). This WIP is looking really good so far, and you have put in a ton of work. I'm very impressed. I think you are right about the head, a bit bigger would look more proportionate. Keep up the good work.

I haven't put in too much work on the head yet.   It's hard to judge the proper scale, when the figure is disassembled.
