Wow, just a ton of cool work already. I can see this one is gonna turn out awesome. My daughter love GOTG too and I too thought the 3.75" Figures they released were awful. Nice work so far. I will follow this one closely. Off to share.

Can't wait to see more work in progress pics of your custom Groot figure. Definitely sculpt the head a bit bigger. Very cool how you added the articulation too !!!

Hey Yarders

BTW, thanks I-a-B-F and JD Deck.

What with the Holidays and painting my basement, I haven't had a lot of time to get to Groot, but here's some of the progress I've made.  He's turning into another Franken-figure.

I wanted to start detailing, but instead made a major structural change in the middle of the build.  I just didn't think Chewbacca's torso was beefy enough for Groot.  Instead of expanding the Chewbacca torso and shoulders, I found a leftover MU Colossus torso and decided to encorporate that.  Those MU figures have great ball jointed torsos allowing for great range of motion.  After trimming the abdomen part down all the way to the ball joint drum, I thought why not combine the two articulating mechanisms.  I cut the peg from Chewie's torso and mounted it on the abdominal half of the Colossus torso.  It worked out nicely.  Groot will have a ball jointed torso and a ball peg abdomen.  Here are the WIPs with an exploded view so you can see the inside.

I added ball jointed wrists using Megablock parts.  The hands are from a Thor movie Frost Giant and even those seem too small, so I'll either have to enlarge them or find small six inch hands from some other figure.

I also flipped the ankle ball joints and turned them into rocker ankles.

The new head sculpt is coming along too.  Sorry for the dark brown color.  That was a mistake as it kinda hides the detail.

Thanks
More progress soon.

Wow what a major work and in the middle of the project! Man, this shows some true attention to detail and articulation. I really am enjoying seeing the process for this!

Hey Yarders

I hope everybody had a great holiday

Christmas is over, and the basement is painted.  I finally had an afternoon to myself.  I have been working on Groot, but making a Groot  without Rocket is like making a Newman without Redford, a Laurel without Hardy or a C-3PO without R2.

I've done a little sculpting, but the scale is daunting.  Every time I think I have it right, I'll take some pics, and it's clear that I'm way off.  I hate high def close ups.  They are unforgiving.

Anyway, I started on a Megablock Call of Duty figure with the ball jointed arms.  I slapped some Aves of the Megablock head.  I carved away what didn't look right until it looked better and then slapped on some more Aves againo until it looked a little better.  Then repeat.   My sculpting style reminds me of that story about how long would it take a hundred chimps typing random letters on typewriters to eventually come up with the complete works of Williams Shakespeare.

Anyway, I'm finally satisfied enough to mold this and make a few copies

For scale

More soon

Thanks

Wow, doesn't that look fantastic! I am hoping he makes ton of copies of this!

Thanks Tamer
The reason I'm making copies is to make alterations on the original to avoid as much resculpting as possible.  I loved Rocket's war face in the prison, and I plan to modify the casts to give both Rocket and Groot different expressions.

I did the same thing for a commission, which I'm not yet at liberty to reveal, but here's a tease.  Those are all modified Depa Billaba head casts.

Yakface is not the only thing I've completed this year.  I hope to show these ladies off soon..

I'll put you down for a set.  I remember your daughter likes GotG.

Yes! It's actually a little tricky, but not impossible if you're patient.
